Naxalism and Military response
by arun govil on May 26, 2010 10:56 AM

The various Governments in the effected states and the Congress Government at the Center are adopting an attitude of an Ostrich who puts his head in the sand and feels secure. The Maoist movement is a full fledged war. With the Maoists being in effective control of nearly 33% of India's landmass, the governments concerned cannot treat this as a simple law and order problem.Nobody can deny the fact that there are compelling reasons for the people to take up arms to achieve their legitimate rights even in a democracy, particularly when the politician-administrator-Police mafia along with their mining godfathers have failed over the last sixty years to foresee the problem as it now stands. That the governments have to shoulder full responsibility for such a situation to develop. The grievances of the tribal have never been sought to be addressed and the State machinery has perpetuated the alienation of these people. The deployment of Police forces to curb the threat is foolish. The Police is not trained physically or mentally to undertake guerrilla warfare, even if a few have been trained at the Jungle Warfare School by the Army. The Police leadership also is not trained for such a role and has failed in such operations. The only recourse for the Government is now to declare Martial Law in the effected areas and let the Armed Forces bring the situation back to normal and hand over to civil administration, so that they can mess it up again in a couple of years for army to set OK

AIRPOWER AGAINST OUR OWN PEOPLE
by v vv on May 26, 2010 10:48 AM  | Hide replies

Whilst it is very easy to use airpower against who does not have any protection to fight; however, the Government should understand that the Naxals/Maoists have lot of sympathisers from the have-nots at the lower end of the population, who are willing to sacrifice their lives. If you start an airpower or military strikes, then the Maoists will penetrate into the Cities and will start their hit-and-run tactics/suicide bombers/etc. etc. which will hurt more people, economy of the country and image of the Nation. Let the Prime Minister visit Dantewada along with all the Leaders of all Opposition Parties, visit the tents of Maoists along with a Mediator, speak - eat - stay with them for a week, understand their problems and come out with solutions - this is the only to win them and not by hitting them. Many frustrated/educated youths in the cities are also now sympathisers of these groups, as they are not getting the College admissions of their choice/their parents are also fed up with the Governments as lack of good universities increase the Capitation fee levels, preventing them from sending their children to good Colleges, thus exposing the Governments failure in providing the right to study, everyday increase in cost of living prevents people from having reasonably accepted level of healthy food, frequent power failures etc. etc. Common men in India are really fed of our Governments and all of them even welcome Good Dictators. PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

My respected citizen of this country had expressed his views against using air and military power. I have a genuine doubt i would like to ask. Why the so called human rights activists never question when innocent civilians lose their life in naxal violence. Do you think simply expressing regret can anyone bring back their lives for their relatives. Are they not our own people when these armed gangs blow them in a bus? While there is no doubt there are socio economic problems existed in our society and country, but to solve them one should not be seen supporting these ghastly acts of murders against our forces.Or we living in a civilised society or in a nomadic land like africa where there is no value to human lives, where humans killed like stray dogs.So my point is that anyone can question governments policies and protests against them but this kind killing spree just to creat fear without having real aim is just disgusting to say the least. So for the sake of our innocent tribal population who are facing real hardships due to these armed thugs, dont try to convince audience that using power is unjust.

Agreed. Maoists/Naxals are thugs. Their actions are out of frustration and revenge against killing their people by the Police / informers. They are scared to come out. They live like animals, and when they come out, they just want to draw the attention; because of their recent actions, people have started talking about the tribals/their welfare, and what is happening in the backyard of our Nation. Sometimes they overdo, but it is out of their frustration. Like Striking employees of AI, which puts lot of people into inconvenience. Bear with them, and show them the right ways. Though there will be resistance initially, definitely we can convince and convert them to be good citizens. Listen to their grievances, focus each group on a monthly basis, and we can definitely show some progress which will definitely improve their living standards, and improve the image of our Nation. It is very easy to use power; but don't forget, the wounder tigers will be much more arrogant. You cannot get rid of all Naxals/Maoists - the remaining will be terrible. BE CAREFUL before TAKING ACTIONS, which will hurt the COMMON CIVILIANS more.

It is true that government is found wanting in solving common people woes. And any government in power doesnt show inclination towards LAND REFORMS, which is central demand of maoists. Because ruling parties are backed by rich and landlords , who never want to share their land with poor. The struggle they are waging should be legitimate and purposeful.Very founder of People's war group Mr.Kondapalli seetharamaiah said in a rare interview that the moists are no longer struglles for poor.

Frankly it appears that Naxals / Maoists have more supporters from among the Have a Lots, than the Have Nots.

Haves are scared of them, and pay them regularly for their protection from the Have-Nots. Have nots receive some facilities from the Maoists in protecting the HAVEs, who contributes to them. They use the Have-Nots to attack those who are not contributing and who are informers. It is a two way protection. Same like bureaucrats - they take care of those industrialists who take care of them, and ignore who are not taking care of them.

Guys it's a simple fact.. till the point ordinary people are dying it doesn't matter. Things will continue the same way and people will keep on dying till these naxals reach close to ministers domiciles. Nobody cares about this country anymore.

People in Armed forces, including this colonel
by Sathish N on May 26, 2010 10:41 AM

Take up armed forces as a job. They end up protecting the corrupt politicians and their policies as against common good of the society. All these are done for selfish reasons - monthly pay, awards/rewards, lucrative posting and promotions.

Are they really serving the nation? Are they really brave??!!

We need to use airpower for surveillance & precision
by Vishnu Sharma on May 26, 2010 10:16 AM

That is a given.

Anyone who argues against this, does not know how to conduct effective military operations or is a blithering idiot who should shut up.

In India, people are always speaking out of turn and drowning out those who give sane advice.

So, I want to tell all these bleeding heart liberals and NGOs that you need to stay out of such matters if you come up with lame stuff like "They are our People"

Because when you start speaking like that, it makes me want to shoot you through your mouth and watch the floor turn red with your blood.

In the final analysis, Airpower is to be used for reconnaissance and also to deliver pinpoint assassination strikes on Naxal hideouts.

Air Power
by dhananjay kritu on May 26, 2010 10:08 AM

Not to use military unless the problem is in border area. Surely Col Athale also knows this. Why do you need air power anyways since naxals surely do not have it? Has our intelligence system died?Better use air power on Kashmir border where it is relevant

building houses and making minority in there own area is not the solution. Final solution rests with Sinhalese who are controlling all political clout. they must be ready to give some power to Tamils so that ppl will be confident and live without fear.
