Very Sad

We are at that point in history where Indian government has to pound bombs over its own population. Obviously if the Air Power is used, the bombs will be dropped on villages where these so called 'maoists' and Naxalbari movement followers have their so called hideouts. Therefore, the bombs will be pounded supposedly on 20-25 mainly tribal and poor districts in Orissa, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. The dream of Nehru and Gandhi will come true. The indegenious people of India, the hartland of the country, will bleed. As long as the bombs are not falling upon the sambhar drinking Tamil Nadu people, it is all OK with Chiddambaram. Thats the drawback of having South Indian's in the power seat. Last time it was Narsimha Rao, who almost created another Pakistan inside India, by allowing BJP attack Babri Masjid. This time its PC who has already created a rebel country within the country. And, on top of all this, will Indian Military Generals agree to this American idea of using Air Power within the country. Seems this writer has not read the Army's charters which disallows use of power against its own people, other than ensuring peace. In Kashmir Army can be deployed as it concerns India's national security. Army has no role in indegenious states like Chattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand. It is the task of Home Securities, like CRPF and Police, under control of Home Ministry. Is Chidambaram educated enough to know all this.

Dear Junad Khan, South Indian or not, PC has proved he is a better minister than a lot of earlier idiots who went before him. You seem to misunderstand the use of'Air Power'. When a insurgency develops you need to have a quick system of moving troops I mean the police forces. CRPF or whatever. To move them by helicopter is one option. The other is to use what we in the Armed Forces call 'armed helicopters'. They act as detterrants and do not actually fire on the 'enemy'.

it is very assumption based. Dont be surprised if some wheeler dealer give xyz weapon(don't want to name) to heat things further.

But sure,if we use deterrent better know what can happen next.

Dear Sukhwant, all of us are Indians and know what Indianness means. One major observation is that whenever it suits the government they blow things out of proportions. For example, Manipur, if one goes by media sensationalism then one will not even travel to Manipur, but on a common day you will not find anything out of place there. Similar is the case with Maoist infested areas. Do not people go to their work and offices, dont children go to school. Many toppers in the CBSE exams came from the same areas where the security personnel are getting killed. Things go out of proportion when indegenious people are attacked and they attack in retaliation. Their caste unities unite them further. In this scenario, my argument is against using Afghanistan like force against indegenious people. In Afghanistan we saw many a US helicopters gunned down by Talibans. What will happen if our Armed Helicopters are also gunned down in Orissa and Jharkhand. We will not be then left with any helicopters. And the Army will become more sad that instead of Pakistan their Helicopters were used against the very Indians whom they were supposed to protect from Pakistan!!!

State faliure to ensure basic rights of tribals
by kenneth gonsalves on May 26, 2010 09:30 AM  | Hide replies

Athavle has rightly stated and I quote

The twin bedrock of the State's legitimacy are democracy that guarantees individuals fundamental rights and freedoms, and the second is the federal principle that grants the right to groups/tribes/sects/faiths cultural expression and freedom to practice their faith, use their language and lead a collective life of their choice.

When a State meets these two basic criterion, it has unmatched legitimacy and the use of force to overthrow it is insurgency/terrorism.

However the Indian state has failed absymaly in ensuring basic rights to the majority of its citizens in general and the tribals in particular, and worse is actively pursing the rights of corporations like Vedanta to take away the land of the tribals and destroy their life. Is it any suprise that the tribals have taken to arm rebellion.

Is it too much to ask for Tribals...

true un-corrupted Tribals want both the rebels(nax, maoist, etc) and the government forces out and tribal lands restored to forest based livelihood.

Too much to ask??...

very good article. Air power is not there only to be showcased, It can be used tactfully. If naxals even know hat air power is being deployed it will scare the balls out of them. A flying Sukoi over an known naxal hideout can cause panic in them and that is time when the CRPF can take them on.A bomb is not needed these naxals will give up even on sound bomb created by fighter jets.

Take up armed forces as a job. They end up protecting the policies of the corrupt politicians as against the common good of the society. All these for selfish reasons - monthly pay, awards/rewards, lucrative posting and promotions.

Are they really brave??!!

some want to escalate the war in wrong places.

Then become fodder/buyer for all grades of weapons dumped to all sides including the enemy.

When there is no need to make Pakistan, indians make the dushmaan make it and keep it alive ...

World has bunch of people who wait for hot and volatile situation to dump weapons to all sides. For some the weapons and training is almost free, for some they charge for technology to fight terror, rebels, nations, etc...

This is an excellent article and every word of it seems to come out from heart, experience and grit.

For the UPA lazy sticklers this kind of action and strategy is a distant reality bcos they are unfit to counter any kind of extremism. Their intellect travels only upto visiting dalit homes, inaugrating schemes after a family name, film a yuvraj working with farmer...etc.
Nothing beyond this comes from them and will never come in future.

As usual, the Col. is oblivious to counter-air measures
by kristalsoldier on May 26, 2010 09:09 AM  | Hide replies

Col. Athale consistently makes the same mistakes over and over again. In this particular case, the Col. suggests the use of airpower will aid in the fight against the Naxals (note how he refers to them as Maoists!). But he does not consider the fact that modern insurgencies do not cower when faced with airpower; rather, they counter it with MANPADs and other counter-air weapons and tactics. Moreover, the Col. has also not established whether the terrain under consideration is conducive to air operations (which in the case of the Naxals is not unless the Col. is implicitly suggesting we use the equivalent of Agent Orange.).

As a net assessment, commentators like Col. Athale are warmonger who don't recognize that that the better way to combat the Naxal-type insurgencies is by conducting OOTW (i.e., Operations Other Than War), for which there are a lot of precedents in the annals of history. But then again, to expect the Col. to be familiar with the literature and battle reports of such operations would be too much.

Mr Kristal Soldier the OOTW you talk about are not permitted by the Naxals themselves. How many time we hear that the Naxals have blown a school/hospital/bridge.
The problem with your kinds is you do not understand the mentality of brigands. Once you show an iron fist and dominate and then offer a rose, they might get you. But a rose from a weakened hand (position) is blasted into smithereens.
Talking about the terrain to be conducive to air-attack, do consider our own Kargil experience. It was a much more difficult terrain but when our air force turned up then the terrorists had to flee. Considering that these terrorists were supported by an enemy state, they had greater access to MANPADS, but this did not help them to prevail.
Your entire argument is flawed.
