I was not so young those days,in school. One thing I remember that my father and his colleagues(all Government servants)were suddenly very punctual.Went to office before time and came back after 5 PM.Trains ran in time,no bandh,no ticket collector could ask for bribe,in fact the line in front of the counter suddenly became so long that people often missed their train.WT travellers were very scared of the flying squad(magistrate checking)or they might have to pay in the form of Nasbandi. Our exams(I am talking of Patna where I studied)were held in time,no walk outs and copying.THere was a change-of course. At this stage looking all around-what is happening in the name of democracy(where you are free to do as you wish-afterall it's our right!)I sometimes think,we perhaps need such control at regular intervals.

All these were "symbolic chocolates" handed over to public at large, so that they would happily tolerate the ill effects of emergency. Radios and TV's were all the time blasting the propoganda of virtues of emergency. People were shit scared about anything and everything. "Youth Congress Gundas" had become Local kings, and everybody was afraid of them. However, people instead of admiting that they were "scared" happily pretending that they were "happy" quoting the symbolic chocolates in order to fool themselves into believing that they were "happy " about emergency rather than admitting that they were "cowards".
I do not agree with inder malhotra in todays time. We may boast of the worlds largest democracy but are we living a quality and peaceful life? The rich are getting richer and the poor more poorer. Politicians are not ready to give up their greed for money and hence still approx 25% of the indian population is still living below poverty lines even after 61 years of independence. My parents tell me that in many terms emergency was great. Every thing in Mumbai became so organised and arranged. For e.g. to catch BEST buses people were strictly moving in queues, conductors and drivers were properly dressed with caps (they don't wear caps these days but cap is a part of uniform). No vulgarity anywhere. Clear cut orders were given to police that if any one creates any non sense then shoot him. Yes corrupt politicians, large business houses who could not run their cheating business were severely affected. She was the only one who saved india from pakistan and divided it and thus weakened it. Can anyone tell me what the current congress leaders have done to tackle the menance from pakistan? There is huge unrest amongst the indian population with rising inflation, rising prices of essential commodities and services, unsecure unemployment and uncertain future. Credit is not available to poor people to start small business. If available then it is at 40% p.a. interest rate and little less. But to corporates it is available at 6% p.a. Indira gandhi was a lady with guts.

How can you ensure that the dictator is good. In the history there are more bad dictators than the good ones. Fact of the matter is when power is with limited people or one person then it's very easy to get corrupt, it's the hallmark of power.

Most of developed countries succeeded because of some dictatorship. Look at Germany or others...
There is a saying "If many people try to kill a snake, the snake will escape. If one tries to kill he will succeed".

....6th December 1992 is also the turning point in the history of independant India. On this day an undelacred civil war began in India taking toll and would take going forward. Many innocents have been and would be killed in the years to come because of the hatred that has been sown. The 1993 Mumbai blasts,93 Mumbai riots,Godhra and post godhra riots in 2002,Akshardham attack, various bomb blasts all over india,Bomb blasts in Mumbai local trains and 26/aa Mumbai attacks are the highlights of this ongoing civil war and no one knows when it would stop. But jst see, none of our politician got any scratch out of this. They all are safe, enjoying and lootign this country and see who gets killed....
