UID itself is not wrong
by Mr Walker on Jun 03, 2010 03:36 PM  | Hide replies

Giving a unique id to an individual in itself is not wrong adding more attributes to it is wrong because then the profiling jobs can start based on various attributes.

That is why I am also opposed to putting down castes in population census, this is dangerous for people in India or any country if someone in power decided to misuse it.

In India the surprising fact is that those people who claim to fight for the cause of poor and backward castes seem to be getting all benefits from those castes but doing everything to oppose the upliftment of the so called backward castes.

We have dangerous people who mask their bad intentions behind so called good causes.

For all these reasons anything that allows profiling of people under any attributes is bad unless we can clean up our systems and society, that will take a lot of time.

guess you are unaware of all the cards we have. what is the need for another card. Make the current ration card a bit more smart, it will turn cheaper. of course the poor card is an old guy and he may not go well with the ultramodern 'biometric' and 'nanotunneling' and 'antineutrino collision identification system' etc....

if a population is dull, there is no smart device to make them smart except for prayers to the almighty.

Instead of wasting $30 billion tax payers money on this UID project, Govt can issue Tatkal PASSPORTS to ppl at a nominal fee of 10 rupees.
And invest $30 billion integration of rivers .

the question is not on Mr. Nandan, he is a revered technocrat czar. But the question is on the need of the new card.

I think the writer must hv been well paid to put forward a shit in a neatly chosen words and well presented.

I do not hesitate to say that he must be an ISI agent working in India. UID is the first attempt by Govt Independent India. All the developed countries have social security number. Even gulf countries hv residnt cards.

well the social security number is self explanatory. Will the government undertake any thing socialistic as did the rich countries abroad. If such a thing is to be instilled, better we should have a debate on it, not go ahead in dictator style.

i think one should not be deaf to critisism and brand all the other who have opposite view as ISI agents.

you should give an ear to critisisms even if it is from your enemy, for there might be some truth in it.

Divide India into 4 (OC/BC/SC/ST) special administrative regions.
They anyway hate each other and this will inject 'real' merit into the society.

Unique I D

UID is an exellenr proposition in modern India in line with the social security number in USA. So what if UK is going to repeal it, shall we follow it ??? not at all. They ruled over us for over 200 years, shall we go back to slavery once again?? This UID is going to be the most effective tool in weeding out the corruption from the society.(at least, it seems so till now). The scope of UID is immense and it would be better if the individual's bank account and property details is also included in it so that as soon as UID is ready the govt. will come to know how much black money is unclaimed and benami property is there. Isn't it a great thinking on govt.'s part. . .

SCRAP UID, FOLLOW UK, AND KEEP ROTTING IN CORRUPTION
by MAHESH GUPTA on Jun 03, 2010 01:35 PM

Very interesting proposition, with sophisticated logic. But how else do you deal with corruption at all levels in Indian Society. Ghost Ration Cards, Ghost NREGA beneficiaries, ghost PAN Holders, Benami properties and transaction, Money laundering, even multiple identities for the same person having different passports in different names, same person being employed at different places, impersonation etc etc. are few of the evils haunting us. UID would conclusively try and end all this.
Does anyone care how much fund leaks out through various ingenious means some of which are listed above? Even if UID manages to just ensure that the Indian/Tax Haven bank account holders having large funds in their accounts and wanting to withdraw/transfer them, will need to quote their UID, it will make a gigantic task easier for GoI. Privacy of the individual will be ensured, at the same time, an audit trail will be established for all individuals carrying out financial transactions.
The intent of the article may be excellent, but outcome of such recommendations can be disastrous.

Privacy Rights are Non-negotiable

Privacy Rights are Non-negotiable

If you want to stop Government of India from getting the apparatus of a police state, if you want to make the case against an intrusive and ruinously expensive new form of bureaucracy, it is time you questioned your touching faith in the surveillance state.
A day after reports of phone tapping of senior politicians surfaced in the media, L K Advani expressed shock at how the Government of India has been making use of the latest phone tapping technology and demanded enactment of a new legislation to protect citizens’ privacy. Why did likes of him did not demand the same as long as phone tapping of ordinary citizens took place? Do only senior politicians have right to privacy? If privacy rights of ordinary citizens is not protected and deemed non-negotiable, rest assured the instances of government agencies tapping the telephones of likes of Bihar Chief Ministers Nitish Kumar, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat and Congress leader Digvijay Singh should not be considered newsworthy.

Senior politicians ask ‘Is the Emergency back?’ Yes, it is back. Unique Identity Card Number project will ensure that Indian citizens are permanently under emergency. The opposition party's demand for scrapping the Telephone Act is justified. The call for urgent scrapping of Unique Identity Card Number project must be supported by citizens of all political classes.

Are all citizens in countries with Social security cards, ID cards, other forms of state issued cards are under Emergency? Is privacy ensured Mr Kinggurudev? Does telephone tapping not take place abroad? Do you want to perpetuate corruption, leakages and poor not getting their due even after 60 yrs of independence? UID is not a panacea but first good attempt
