Petty crimes matter in western countries
by Devils Advocate on Aug 19, 2009 09:20 AM  | Hide replies

Yes, its not like India , where you can whisk through a cop who tries to stop you for speeding or routine check. When you are in other countries, better behave as per the laws of the country so that you would never get in to trouble. One could be arrested and put in prison for any petty civil violations and its quite ordinary there. And when you are already in trouble, its purely your luck that the officer is a nice guy and good mood. Else, they can and will do whatever their code permits them to do. They are not supposed to use any comments whether personally or racially. I have come across several stories from friends and also faced officers once on the road, they are quite decent. But, if you behave differently, they would be provoked. Best thing is to accept any mistakes whether committed knowingly or unknowingly and pay the fine and take it as a lesson. This gentleman should have paid the speeding ticket on time, esp. when you are in doubt what could be the repurcussions.
There are few cops who are bit harsh, but they are within the limitations that their code allows. They are million times better than many cops in India where one could be picked up without any reason.

Indian police are underfunded and underpaid. Despite this, india is safer than us.

You like being in a silk cage. Eat them $$allrs up.
There is no place like a free India. So no need to get cynical.
We have our problems but how old are we ... independence in 1947. What about US of A? when did it?

Following rules is one thing but to an extent that it makes you a insensitive machine is not quite the way India is ever gonna go even in its purple days to come.

Got a question for the good professor...
by kristalsoldier on Aug 19, 2009 07:12 AM | Hide replies | Hide message

Dear Prof. Shankar,

One quick quedtion for you. Are you an Indian CITIZEN? If yes, then yes, we should be incensed about your experience. If not, then its an American problem. Its got nothing to do with India. Of course, in the name of universal justice, we should be concerned. But when such things happen to Indian citizens, then the matter becomes very personal - as I am sure you can appreciate. Now, having said that, I am not suggesting that the SRK merits as much attention as it has. I am sure 100s of cases like his have been and are being experienced by Indians (and others) traveling to America. I also can understand the circumstances under which the Americans would be creating laws and procedures like the ones experienced by SRK (and others). My point is that we, India that is, should institute similar protocols - like how Brazil did immediately post 9/11.

Again, I am truly appalled at your experience, but the degree to which I would be engaged with it would be contingent on how you answer the question I posed to you at the outset.

All the best!

When Barrack Obama comes to India next time, stop him at IG international airport, strip him and tell him it is for security.

If question say " If Kalam can be stopped and questioned why not Obama?" Will Indians have the guts to do that

India is not your neighbourhood dog the way you talk about her.
Are you an Indian national.. Yes then whats your contribution to society. Do you vote correctly.. do you do your bit to society.. do your relatives and family?
Don't just start the same rant. It so typical of people like you who have done nothing and blame it all on an abstract entity.

No tell me really why most S. Indians mess it all up when it comes to articulation.. well it never reaches that distance.. and dies much earlier in the grammatical zone. Hate to say it and I have a lot, and I mean a LOT of S. Indian friends.. Still sometimes all this just creeps up my nerves. I would rather have Telugus and Tamils use their own language.. so they can be understoof more so often.

sure siree Mr Knowall or whatever your name is. Try framing one sentence in any of the south-Indian languages. And do we even need talk about the language proficiency of your ilk who immigrate illegally and drive cabs in NY. Just like your ilk ! loud mouthed ! Perhaps you should hear your father or mum speak in english, that would be quite something lol

It makes business sense for SRK to frame up a holdup in Newark. What does it require.. a fistful of dollars. Their judiciary doesn't have the time to look into petty matters like this and Khan gets away with much needed free pub for his upcoming movie that has all the telltale signs of something fishy in all of this.. "My name is Khan".

I dont think SRK needs unessary publicity . i cant understand why we cannot understand that these procedures in american airports are really un nessary. When the home department has cleared you to travell to the country whith all clearence about your background. then why simply hold up people . These checks are relly un nessary and should be stopped .tell me what has come off these checkings . have they caugh any one credible to say that this guy was a element who wants to disturb national security. So Thomas khan .. thing in a wider angle my friend. probably SRK is talking on behest of all those people held up by airport security whthout any reason just to satisfy there authority which fuels there inner egoes fopr whatever ..
people who havent travelled i guess talk like this .

This is the Apathy of Indian Media
by firefly on Aug 19, 2009 09:04 AM  | Hide replies

Indian Media and people in Indian politics, especially Congress will rise and cry only when a celebrety or a minority level person is tried.

Thats the shame of our country. Thats why many other nationality people think India is just about Gandhi, Hindi Cinema, and Tandoori Chicken.

Its not the others that we need to blame, its our Media.

Now Block Heads like Maheh Bhatt, Ambika Soni,Shabana Azmi, Congress Party will say we dont read news.

Oh! tht this poor guy wasnt a Minority...ufff we just missed on getting into news! thats what Media and the above guys will have to say.

I never agree more with Amar Singh more than what he said yesterday about their own ill treatment not being publicised.

Forget all, the media missed to take on news for frisking KALAM until 3 months. Such a Shame!

SRK was a total politician in his interview, turning back on all words about his anger, filth and vows about not returning to US.

SRK is a shame icon!

SHYAMAL SENGUPTA
Arrest of Ravi Shankar
by SHYAMAL SENGUPTA on Aug 19, 2009 09:02 AM

I feel for his plight but is an Indian citizen or just of Indian origin. If he is not an Indian citizen no one has the right to protest in our country but to state facts what does USA really stand for? It can be the leading nation but it is only for whites and a rare few others like Obama.

Let the human rights watch 'dogs' in India and the world take up the matter but they will not as they are afriad of hurting American's sentiments but countires like ours or China, Cuba, Iran etc they would blow like a gale force wind.
