" the US would know that Pakistan is a fundamentally more valuable ally in Afghanistan than India ever can aspire to be"

Gawd! He makes it sound as though India wants to suck up to the US! Idiot!

"They'd see it as an unwarranted Indian interference in their country's internal affairs."

Is this idiot for real? Now when the h*ll did Talib*trds become Afghans??? They're all Pakis and merceneries paid by ISI.. everyone knows that.

Many more such thoughts by the author... dismayed to think that he's in the foreign service. Must've been a reservation candidate.

Better editing required
by sesame on Jul 10, 2008 02:45 PM

Is there any way that Rediff copy editors can cut down such long commentaries to web-readable size. Not all of us have 21-inch screens. Mr Kumar seems intent on putting all the experience of his 3 decades in the IFS into each of his pieces. This makes his pieces boring and incomprehensible to the average reader. He should read Washington Post and learn how to write commentaries suitable for posting on the web. Or he should stick to print media instead of being a pain in the ass by insisting on giving us a collective crick in the neck

Taliban?
by debojyoti basu on Jul 10, 2008 09:22 AM

How Taliban is coming into the picture in Afghan Affairs?Because the entity called Taliban simply does not exist? The so called Taliban movement is an ISI expeditionary force to take control of Afghanistan and stop the Pustun nationalism. Its not the Taliban that wants India out of Afghanistan but Pakistani strategic community and its intelligience agencies. So talking of Taliban, Great Game,Regional Power ,Responsibility are all bull shits...Great Game..quite funny does Pakistan even have the capacity to participate in the so called Gr8 game....it only serves the purpose of discussions for so called US and UK strtegists....Regional Power? Sorry but existing power equations makes us to believe that India has outclassed this region long time ago so why this tag right now? and last comes Responsibility? What responsibility? Why the hell only India shud be responsible?ISI and Pakistan is a threat to India and so it must be destroyed under any circumstances....let theose chiks be cry baby abt Indian support to the Baloch,Sindhi and Pustun nationalites...Its absolutely necessary for India to control the land from Afghanistan to Bangladesh...to maintain a secure India.
So i feel the writer got it all wrong....There cannot be any peace with entity which is heel bound on destroying our nation....

Writer is a Taliban sympathist
by Saibaskar Parthasarathy on Jul 10, 2008 08:31 AM  | Hide replies

Just in the overall eloberate column the point being made is taliban was not evil and we made ourselves their target by aligning with the US. Obviously the writer cannot be anyone but a communist sympathist. India has a direct stake in the afghan war. Pakistan created this monstor called Taliban and had Taliban played its role to perfection without romanticizing a certain Osama Bin Laden through Taliban Pakistan would have reached former-soviet Central Asian republics and there-by would have controlled vast swath of lands with oil and natural gas. Unfortunately Taliban's failure in accessing the impact of American reaction to attack in its own soil destroyed the entire plan. It is commonsense that India has to be present in the otherside border of Pakistan.. this would keep a tab on Pakistan and its 'naughty' generals with penchant for trouble. Any self respecting country should not forget its humiliation and Taliban was responsible for India's humiliation at Kandahar and if not for anything atleast for that incident we must ensure an active participation in the effort to nutralize and eliminate them

Be ready for damage!!!
by tar sha on Jul 10, 2008 06:39 AM

If India wants to be a part of big game, we need to be ready to pay the price of it also. World will not give weightage to India just like that, we will have to prove that we deserve that.

The pro american lobby needs to stop
by indiman on Jul 10, 2008 05:55 AM  | Hide replies

Great article, we need to have our own strategic path and not kow tow the american idiocy. They have their own interests and they dont match ours. Iran is not our enemy, i dont care what anybody says. I still remember the day when the OIC was going to go the extent of oil embargo against India instigated by pakistan. Iran was our only ally there and they skillfully destroyed that whole motion for us. I am not saying they are our all weather friend but at least they are reasonable. I would say that the Israelis have been reasonable with us as well. We cant pick sides. Being americas sidekick gets us nothing.

I think we should talk to pakistan about afghanistan because taliban doesent think on their own, their brains lie in Islamabad. I think India and Pakistan can have a mature relationship, take a leadership role in south asia. My dream is the day when India and Pakistan can respect each others interests and strengths mutually and become allies. Pakistan cannot defeat India militarily and India doesnt need Pakistani lands. This alone should be sufficient to develop a friendship.

Are u day dreaming?? Pakistan motto is to break up india and occupy kasmir... pakis know that they cant defeat India in war thats why they are waging a proxy war and supporting militants.
