FIRM RESOLVE IS NEEDED
by Vivek Harry on Jul 09, 2008 04:43 PM  | Hide replies

The author seems to be from the panchsheel university. While sending troops to afghanistan, we should keep in mind the IPKF experience in Afghanistan, if we are hoping for some quick miracles, then we better not go there, but if we have some long-term 50-100 year plan of changing the whole religiopolitical flora and fauna, then we can go ahead, the problem is totally religiopolitical and has to dealt with by a firm powerful deep commitment which is really long-term. We should go only if we are confident that we will come back only if we are victorious. That victory is not possible unless we break up Pakistan into smitherens and change the color from green to white if not saffron. If we are not supremely confident and hell bent on changing the color of the sky, then there is no point in going. This battle cannot be won on the battlefield, it should go into the homes and the mosques, if we have the guts to do that, full steam ahead.

Vivek... lets assume India gets involved Militarily in Afghanistan.ok. In few years USA and NATO will pull our of Afghanistan. Then India will be left on its own. Do you really feel India can win in Afghanistan on its own? Think practically everyone. Afghanistan is not our war. Our defence should focus on kashmir china and other countries in our sphere of influence.

that is why I have clearly said that if we think that this is a 1-year or 2-year war, then it is wrong. If the USA and NATO pull out, in the long-term they themselves will have to face the consequences, if we are in this, we are there together, if we are divided, we will fall one by one, there can be no peace with this ideology, today if we take the initiative and do what it takes, we will win, we will have to change the concept of war, as I said this war has to be fought not just on the battlefield, but at places where we have never gone before, we cannot win this war with the old mindset. Now is the time to be bold enough to see the reality when it can still be changed.

There is no need for india to get involved in any long term war in Afghanistan. War cost money. Our defence budget is nothing compared to USA or NATO countries. Long term war in Afghanistan is not something that india can afford.

no need to be merciful on killers
by Hari G on Jul 09, 2008 04:22 PM  | Hide replies

Bhadrakumar I respect your seniority and experience, but the entire world will differ with you on this point. Taliban follows political islam and sees the world in binary vision. muslims and infidels. they will kill any indian any hindu. Hindu Kush itself means "mound of Hindus slaughtered" during the islamic invasion.
not to get distracted, unless islam stops killing of other religious people and opens up their countries for other religions, and accept secularism as the governing ethos, we cannot sit idle. every secular indian should support the war against terror(islam)

Our war against terrorism is being fought in Kashmir, in the North east India and with the Islamic terrorist organisations like SIMI. I dont want India to spend tax payers money for buying weapons from Russia, USA, Isreal or South Africa and then explode it in Afghanistan. Let clean our house first and then think about Afghanistan.

when we take the war to the enemy, the war in our homes will die on its own

if we want to take the war to the enemy then we should take it to POK not Afghanistan. USA is already spending billions of dollars in Afghanistan. India adding few million dollars will not make any difference.

Someone seems to have given the author too much of paper to write in. He has gone, on and on and on....It's absolutely boring. I like the way ex-RAW man Raman writes. To the point and no-nonsense.

Drawing Lessons from Kabul Bombing
by Rajiv Narayanan on Jul 09, 2008 04:07 PM

Wrong lesson. That Taliban is sponsored, funded, trained and controlled by the Pak Establishment is known. It also has the tacit support from China on this issue, as it diverts India's attention from Chinese build-up in the NE.
India has to learn that Gandhian philosophy does not extend to International relations.
Need to be firm and 'tough' with both countries, else our embassies in many countries would be considered as soft targets.

Bhadrakumar is a hare brained idiot
by Singha on Jul 09, 2008 03:58 PM

Powerful Afghanistan is in India's interests to cut pakistan down to size.

islamic talibs be damned. We have to empower Karzai if necessary by sending in our jawans.

India should declare an security guarantee alliance with afghanistan to protect the unity and integrity of afghanistan.

pakhtoons deserve freedom from the pakistani punjabi wolfs and their talib puppets.
