Politicians need to change attitude
by Rajeev Anand on Jan 26, 2007 02:46 PM  | Hide replies

Dear Mr.President

My sincere and heart felt wishes to you on thsi republic day. We are really proud to have you as our president.

If only 50% of the MPs and MLAs incorporate your vision and attitude, our country will grow leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, Indian politicians and government office bearers barring a few at the top, are still in the old mindset and take the people for granted. Corruption is still rampant. Leaders still mislead gullible people for gaining political mileage. Example: Recent riots in Bangalore - for no good reason and a 14yr old boy lost his life. Whoever did it, why did they do it?

As the saying goes, you cant keep fooling all the people all the time. There might come a day, and if frustrated youth rise against the politicians, god save them.

I would truly appreciate, if you can educate the political class that they are hear to serve the people and not themselves.

In the prevailing situation, no matter how much foreign reserves you have, doesn't matter, if politicians are inciting people to fight against each other for religion, for reservations, have to pay bribes to register lands, etc, your vision is never going to materialise.

A responsible attitude by the politicians is a must if our country's growth should sustain.

Raj

First things first: If Dr. Kalam walks off into the sunset after just one term as prez, each and every one of us will be the poorer. The lofty standards he has brought to the prez' office is going to be exceedingly hard to match.

Secondly, why is it that we need someone or an occasion to remind us of our duties? I mean, there may be a few exceptions, but, most of us, we keep on wondering what we have received. Why? Why can we not ponder how we can give to our motherland? Why is it that if we are not reminded, we live in harmony, but whenever we are reminded that our beliefs (religious or otherwise) or our castes are different, we tend to do a Jekyll-and-Hyde? Why is it that the Narendra Modis or the A. Ramadosses of this world have sp much clout? And why is it that we are reminded of the backlog of pending cases in our courts whenever we look through the backgrounds of our elected representatives? Also a small question. When we have a retirement age for all services, why not a retirement age for politicians? I mean, it seems people retire from what they do, and then join politics. And we go and vote for them. Not bad, but%u2026. I mean I certainly have the highest regard for senior citizens, but to have them as ministers? Please, there are very good reasons, why they retire from service. And after that age, why do we have them as the decision takers / representatives for the country?

It is not difficult to find the answers. Most of us are %u2013 and I admit sheepishly, myself included %u2013 rather selfish and at the same time insecure. People from all walks of life were so involved in our freedom struggle. We have very conveniently forgotten the raison d%u2019être for our emergence as a free nation. Very comfortably we lead cocooned, independent lives, without a thought that if our forefathers had adopted this same attitude we would probably have still been under the British Raj. Consequently, the British Raj has been replaced now by a Criminal Raj, where your credentials as a candidate in the electoral bazaar are rated by the number of cases you have against you.

Also there is no point blaming the system. We are part of the system. We need to change if the system is to change. The very obvious question is how. Let me suggest a couple of things, which should be do-able by anyone actually bothered.
Firstly we can exhort news channels and newspapers to run campaigns seeking Dr. Kalam%u2019s re-election. He is very obviously the conscience of the nation, and has struck a chord with all strata of society. I am sure when newspapers can run opinion polls on Ganguly and Dravid and Chappell, and about Abhishek & Aishwarya, surely this would be a more meaningful campaign?
The second suggestion I have deals with corruption. The state exchequer loses crores of rupees every year, but obviously none of us is bothered. We still would not mind greasing palms to get things done, purchasing tickets from black marketers or to encourage our children to cheat (by my reckoning the seeds of the attitude towards corruption are sown thus). If we really cared, all this would not happen. If we are genuinely fond of our country, we have to put our collective foot down on this, and ensure that the exchequer loses less, and tax evasions and bribes are minimized.

Jai Hind shouldn%u2019t be something to be uttered only in the last week of January, mid-August or early October. It is to be felt 24*7*365.

MEDIA !! why do you let OUR PRESIDENT down ??
by on Jan 26, 2007 10:20 AM

I just dont find words to react to the enigmatic speach only Dr. APJ can deliver. Your Excellency, Mr. President, YOU HAVE SHOWN US (the common youth) WHAT TO DREAM and WHAT TO GIVE.
But, I was totally dejected to see the title on REDIFF home page about the speach. The media report (almost every online news site) picks the negative para refering to Killings (which is not even 1% of the speach) writing as though that was main agenda. Some sitting abroad wanting to read Presiden'ts speach was taken a back with that negative note. I remember another great Speach by Dr. APJ where he mentioned how our media highlights negative points. Why do you let our President down all the time.?? Why dont you reflect positive aspects first and hilight more of those inspiring facts he gave.? atleast on Republic Da !!

I truly feel elated reading the article while I am sitting in the confines of a developed and organised nation outside of India.
In keeping with tradition, I agree the article inspires, makes you feel good and also motivates you to take action.
Understandably we have jokers who are currently ruling the country and have no sense of what vision and service means.
Its a grand plan to Reach the unReached and I have taken steps to do, perform and act as a true Indian based on this Vision. Thanks President, my day is made.

President's Republic Day Speech
by Dragon Cares on Jan 26, 2007 08:22 AM

Dear President: I salute YOU for your most inspiring speech delivered for this Republic Day. After YOU became the President of our country, people like me always awaiting for your great speech on every Republic Day and Independence Day. Your speech not only reflects your vision for our country but also reflects the silent burning desires of millions of our country people. But, a simple question from a common cititzen is, how many of our Politicians and so called great Government Officers do really understand your every word and really willing to work in the way YOU dream for Vision-India? Once Republic Day and Independence Day have gone, everbody (Politicians, Government Officers, ofcourse citizens) tend to forget your vision and turning their attention to regular life. Even 1% of our people want to work on your vision-India, there are so many hurdles in the form of Government officers and Politicians. So, again we are back to Square One. Unless people (citizens, Government officers, Politicians) change their attitude, willing to embrace the development, the common man will continue to suffer like anything. Mr. President, (y)our visions are great but path for those visions are full of muds, stones, needles, horns etc. First we need to make the path clear to walk on the path. Jai Hind!!!!
