Selection process
by Dr.Senthil on May 27, 2006 11:51 PM
I whole heartedly agree with your view. Some schools are very well known for their selection process. i also know schools which impose restrictions on the mode of transport a student has to take to school, leave alone educational qualification of parents. Its not a herculean task making intelligent students score cent percent, let a school take up about 50-75 average students as assessed by Xth standard results and train them to score a centum in XIIth, then its really worth praising.

Dear sir,

With due respect I submit that the acheivement though laudable on paper, is nothing extraordinary considering the selection process of the intake of students and Iam reasonably sure that quite a few students would be detained in 11th std. just to make sure that a 100% pass is guaranteed. In such schools the selection criteria is also based on the educational background of the parents and the family background. Most parents could afford private tuitions etc. Let the same management take over a government school in a rural area take fifty students from a village background and make them pass, then I salute it. Venkatesh.

Venkatesh,

If someone tells you to do something in Zimbabwe or Timbuktoo, will you go there? The school is in Chennai. If you want your village to have such school, please take initiative and admit students based on merit.

The substance of this article is that Merit alone is good for the country. PLEASE TAKE A NOTE OF THAT. Thank you.

Hi Venkatesh,

It was mentioned in ur msg that DAV selects a student based on the educational background of that student's parents, notwithstanding his family background. I dont understand where you came up with such a baseless statement. I am an alumnus of DAV & want to let you know that both my parents didn't even go to college. Well, I was not shown the door at DAV, for this! In fact, I had many friends at DAV who came from humble bacgrounds, did very well & placed themselves in prestigious institutions.
Personally, I had my best experiences at DAV, be it learning or otherwise. More than studies, they teach us to respect others and lead a life based on ethics. Practices like yoga, 'havan' & daily prayers always kept us on the right stead & disciplined us for life. I am assuming you did all this research in order to compare DAV with other schools, including your own.
And I totally agree with Mukund, you can't blame IIT for taking only the cream, can you?! Please understand that DAV is the most sought after school for no mean reason. They dont have to take in students from a rural area & make them pass to prove themselves.

If you still want to argue: r.chiranjeevi@gmail.com

Hi venkatesh,

Your argument is analogous to saying--- IITs and BITS are not really good. They are so only because of their stringent selection process.---
These go hand in hand. The school and its teachers produce good results, hence the students compete hard to get admitted in to this school. And hence there is a selection process. Its inevitable.
And, maximum preferrence is given to those students who opt to continue in the school after the Xth. Only the remaining seats are filled by a stringent selection process to accomodate students applying from other schools

Congragulations to all the students

It is indeed a pleasure to find students excelling in CBSCE exams and to find the students so focussed in their academics. The School management deserve a pat in the back for their contributions to these results

Dear Mr. Ramachandran,
Let me first introduce my self. I'am U.Venkatesh, Chartered Accountant presently working in an export house in Bangkok as financial controller. My family has been running 4 schools one in ooty, one in coonoor and two near cpet. We have students from all backgrounds, and we have been making about 80% of them pass. The teacher put in more effort unlike in DAV where only the cream of the cream is recruited as is admitted by the principal himself. I for one went to St. Bedes wherein we had sons of engine drivers, orphans, sons of barbers, small time shop owners, etc. The teachers sweated their drows out and made most of them pass the Anglo Indian board exam. Therein lies the real effort. No doubt the performance of DAV is laudable but what is the use of boasting of the best ghee when only the best butter can enter your premises ? If you are intresteted in a debate about this over the internet you are free to contact me at venkivasu@rediff.com. Regards, Venaktesh

Id like to make it clear that though DAV boasts of itself as being the top school of India,it takes only the best students through an entrance tests.
Whats the use of taking only good students.I challenge them to take average students and make them intelligent.Their entrance tests are a flawed one as they give extra 5%marks to their own students and do prejudice. So think before rating this as the best school of India.

Hi krithika,

Going by your argument, no institute, whether IIT or BITS or Stanford, should be given credit!!! One can always say that everything depends entirely on the student only. Discounting the good performances in the JEE and other entrance exams for your sake, the performance of the students in the CBSE exam itself has been outstanding.

I studied at this school right from my upper KG. Also if it were not for your chem teacher who didnt like you or the math teacher who was rude to the "not so good" students, you might have scored only half of what you did.

Undoubtedly the school and the teachers do play a great role, directly or indirectly, in the success story of the students.

If you still dont look up to any of your teacher, it is very unfortunate.

IS IT REALLY A SUCCESS STORY
by krithika on May 27, 2006 03:55 PM
To think that this school creates the best student is wrong. God help you if you are average or worse, decided not to run the rat race of PM/PD or JEEs or million other competitive exams.
Can an institution take credit for the good performance of students in PM/PD JEE preparatory classes? What I want to know is how many students did not go for these classes and have performed well?
Having studied in DAV for 7 years and having chosen not to take any of the million classes, I had to fend for myself. My physics teacher could not explain any concept and would rather have us repeat it a million time till we learnt it by-heart. The chemistry teacher did not like me, for whatever reason and was mean at every opportunity; don't even ask me about how rude the Maths teacher got with those of us ``not bright enough'' for her. Today, there are only a handful of teachers I look up to with respect.
Years later, a psychiatrist told me that nearly half his clientele is from DAV. Kudos, indeed!
