Regarding the entrance criteria, I remember (this was in '86) that though the test was tough, they also took average peole who they felt held promise. I myself was a rather average person, who they accepted to take (Padma Seshadri had at that time asked for a rather large "gift" which we could ill-afford).
DAV was a good school - I came out much better than I entered.
As someone up there has mentioned, we at that time never realised that we were part of such a good school. It was never prudish, we were as mischievous as they come, and 20 years after passing my 10th std and after having spent most of these years working in Europe and USA, I must give full credit to the teachers (including our principal Mr. Ram Kalia) DAV for having believed in a boy who no one believed in.
I still remember the way Mr. Ram Kalia taught us about the Pythagoras theorem - more as a part of historic lore than a dry formula. It is a style I continue to use as I teach the boys at Harvard.
As an alumnus of DAV and currently in IIT I wish to state that we did well inspite of the school and not because of it.The only thing I can thank the school for is that they selected the best and put them in a single class. The reporter can perhaps take a cue from the steady decline in teaching standards and the high attrition rates of teachers to other schools. All we ever did was cram our brains inside out without understanding a single thing. And yes any achievement in the field of IIT JEE was due to the coaching classes. The only way a school can truely be called the best is if the students make it through competetive examinations without coaching classes
At first congratulations to the school management and the students. Way to go guys.... But here is my concern..is it the best school or one of the best schools..I know of a couple schools which I thought were the best ones..but i have never read anything about those schools ever on rediff. instead of blaming anyone or anything I would like to request the Rediff management to look into this schools and then compare it if they want. One of these schools has a history of 62 years of excellence. here is the address: Netarhat Residential School Palamau, Via Ranchi Jharkhand-835218 The other school is Vidya Vihar, Purnea, Bihar Started by the Alumni of Netarhat Residential School. I hope Rediff will go through a little pain of research, and then publish such news as " India's Best School". Just for information, Average of Vidya Vihar 10th results is close to 87%. I can give exact figures if anyone wants to know. Once again, Congrats guys!

Education being in theconcurrent list in the Constitution, talking about India's best school will take a lot of pain to analyse the basis of naming some school or the other as the best school.
Netarhat has been an experiment in promotion of excellence. It was founded as a project. To know all about it some one will have to go into it in depth.
I may be of help to place facts how Netarhat is the indeed the best school and how Vidya Vihar has become its follower!
It is a real pity that u still carry this article and are misleading people. I want to re-iterate the fact that the highest score is 488 (97.6%) and it has been secured by the students from P.S. Senior and Sankara Senior Secondary. Why dont you verify facts and research about the other schools before publishing such reports???!!!At the outset, you definitely cannot rank schools based on acads alone.Pls see overall performance..
I think 'Best' is an overstatement. 'Most Marks Fetching' would be more accurate. As part of the media, one would expect rediff.com to avoid such immature generalisations.
It is not surprising for a school which conducts an entrance exam before giving admission to students to produce good results. But, what is the point in that? Is it not the duty of a school to admit all levels of students (not just the bright ones) and giving them a good education?
read with patience the comnments posted. let us appreciate the good work done and give some constructive suggestions. coongratulations to the entire team of staff and students for the excellent work for nearly a decade
