Here is a widely accepted Ranked list on basis of merit & performance, :

1. Lal Bahadur Shastri
2. Morarji Desai
3. Atal Behari Vajpayee
4. Jawaharlal Nehru
5. Gulzarilal Nanda
6. P.V.Narasimha Rao
7. Indira Gandhi
8. Manmohan Singh
9. Rajiv Gandhi
10. (a)V.P.Singh, (b)I.K.Gujral, (c)Chandrashekhar, (d)Deve Gowda, (e) Charan Singh

There are 5 contenders for the tenth position and there is more or less a tie between them. But sub-ranking them we find Charan Singh at the bottom.

Nice to Know.
by Anand on May 21, 2004 11:05 AM

Hi All

Nice to know that our PM's are educated. Will this be applicable to all the politicians in INDIA. I guess it must be, A must for a politician to have a minimum Masters Degree in political Science. Otherwise this Country is in Wrong Hands. A Uneducated person leading our country, I can't even Imagine.

Well Thanks for giving me this oppurtunity.

Thanx for a good info.
by Vijay Pavan on May 21, 2004 11:05 AM  | Hide replies

Dear Rediff,

I thank u sincerely for giving such a good information abt our PM,s. It is revealing that modern India is experiencing the Genius and highly qualified intellectuals like Manmohan Singh, Atal bihari Vajpayee, IK Gujral and PV Narsimha Rao. We also had some opportunistc PM's like VP Singh and Deve gowda.

I dont understand why the PM's and PM aspirants of Nehru-Gandhi family do not hav any proper complete qualification. Despite being spent hugely on their education, even Rahul got a Post graduation without having a undergraduation qualification. These r the facts which need to b known to Indian public.

Congratulatiions...
by Gopal on May 21, 2004 10:59 AM

Surely we have the most knowledgeable top two people in the world: An accomplished scientist as President and now an accomplished economist and financial expert at Prime Minister. The 21st century can be really ours if the positive energies of these two are focused to sustainable development. Most importantly, the Laloos, the Pawars, the Mulayams, the Mayawatis, etc. should benefit from their association by being humble and at least not harm the coalition, if not extend support! The NDA would also do well by behaving as a constructive Opposition instead of shreiking (a la Sushma, Uma).
Hope we can keep singing 'Sare jahan se accha...' over and over again.

Qualifications for a PM
by JAIBY JOSE on May 21, 2004 10:25 AM

In this 21st century at least a Post Graduation is needed for a PM with essential General Knowledge. All the MP's should posses a valid Graduation. These matters should be implemented strictly.

The age limit for an MP should be a maximum of 65 years and for MLA's should be a maximum of 75 years. If this is the criteria India will be among the first of all nations in the world. The thinking power and the potential of the person will decrease when the age goes up. So this criteria should be included along with the condition for filing nominations for elections.

At least something points the necessity to move out of dynasty rule...just imagine having Sonia Gandhi in the list...

also I hope certain educational background becomes necessary for bigger offices in this country...firstly, criminals should be stopped from standing in elections!

Qualification and PMs

Dear rediff,

That was revealing. The man from Kashi Vidyapeeth seems to have outperformed the rest. Unfortunate that his stint was short. With due respect to Atalji.

Venkatesh
