get rid

Before India bid to be one of the new poles of power, we should get rid of Marxists, Muslim fundamentalists, Christian missionaries and Nehruvian Stalinists. These people are so actively at work against India with their negative propaganda.

Superpower (continued from earlier message)
by Vivek on Jul 14, 2004 03:34 PM

This is to all the religious zealots out there.

The accusation that Rajeev is talking only about Hindus' achievements is pure baloney and comes out of a deep sense of insecurity or an intent filled with malice. These accusations only prove the point that some of his articles contain - that to be a Hindu is a crime. The moment you saw a mention about the scholars of the past your mind went - hey wait a minute - there is no Christian or Muslim here, so let us abuse the author for being "non-secular". Take a chill pill guys and let everyone live their lives. If you have to spend all that pent up energy do it by doing something constructive for the country and not by hating your fellow Indians.

Brothers and sisters, there are enough people out there singing pageans on the achievements of the Christians and Muslims - people who also in the same breath condemn the "atrocities" of the Hindus. You guys do not require a Rajeev Srinivasan to extol your virtues. I am glad that someone like Rajeev

Superpower
by Vivek on Jul 14, 2004 02:34 PM

Well written Rajeev. I am one who firmly believes that Indians are damn good at what they do if they put their mind to it. It is a question of willingness rather than ability that matters in this context. The Indians should put their docile attitude aside and show a bit more of aggression. It is just because the country is so huge and has adequate resources that it is able to survive with minimum external help. Have Indians forgotten how Uncle Sam's sanctions had little effect on India. Why do you think Pakistan helped by China has an agenda on India? It arises out of a feeling of insecurity or knowledge that India can be a superpower.

It really ashames me when fellow Indians think that India is nothing - you guys have this post colonialist hangover thinking a white skin is better than a brown skin. I do not claim that the reverse is true but definitely we are second to none - having travelled a significant part of the world and worked with different nationalisties including that of the super powers I am more convinced of this fact.

Someday, somewhere, wishful thinking mate
by Manoj Kewalramani on Jul 14, 2004 01:33 PM

An article based on narrow interpretations of two authors. Although it raises some very important questions about the global order, it fails in its estimation of the limitations of India while it over estimates the problems of the West. However, the most amazing feature is the ignorance shown towards Russia!

India although stuffed with potential is a misgoverned nation with a dormant and largely ignorant population. When a bulk lives without social security and the middle class struggles to survive it is ridiculous to imagine about Pax Indica. Furthermore, as a nation we havent been able to sort our own neighbourhood where are we seeking hegemony.
Lets look inside and then look out when we are ready.

Finally, as far as India being a libertarian power. One needs to only look as far as our popular right wing parties to realise that. And again even the Wilsonian America was libertarian, so it is the nature of power to eliminate such idealism.

we are ugly
by shailendra on Jul 14, 2004 03:16 AM

I appreciate Rajeev Srinivasan for his effort in doing research and analysis. India is indeed a great country with glorious past. But its ability to be a superpower is disbelieving. Because we Indians are by nature corrupt, we are ugly. And this applies not only to the politicians or bureaucrats, but to every Indian. Ever wondered why a vegetable seller always tries to sell you rotten vegetables, milkwala tries to sell you adulterated milk, general labourer will always try to linger the work so that he can get overtime???
You cannot get your work done in any govt office unless you bribe babus, peons. You can not get your own money (after maturation of Kisan Vikas Patra you had bought from your savings) without giving certain percentage to the clerks. In a country where corruption has become a way of life and ppl are so self-centered that they put personal interest before everything thing else, one should not talk about becoming a superpower as a nation. I think we have to first evolve from Neanderthals.

Hope it comes true...
by Tony Kurien on Jul 14, 2004 03:04 AM

I hope that India would be a great power one day. But I really doubt it. How many people in India really cosider themselves as Indians.. I don't know. And with so much of quarrelling and infighting where would this en up? No need to look far beyond, just read all the comments posted here. It is not that Indians are soft but they only see their immediate and visible 'enemy'. Anyone can misuse it even a small country like singapore can rule over India if it wants to. They don't have to look anywhere for troops , man power or money. We ourselves will provide them with all..then why blame Britain or Afganistan or Persia for our miseries? And if any time America or China wants they can destabilise the country. If US can divide muslims in Iraq to Sunnis and Shias then they need not put much effort to divides us. I don't think India did not look outside because we were 'good'. Its just that there was no motivation for Kingdoms or empires here to cross mountains to bare deserts and rule over some nomadic set of people where as the others were attracted to wealth in India. And if any time America wants they can destabilise the country
