UCC or Hindu Civil Code
by Vijaya Kumar on Aug 04, 2003 06:46 PM

An excellent article, I enjoyed reading it. Yes there should be one uniform civil and criminal code. The past may serve as a basis for formulating a code. Criticism of the past will be of little help, the inapplicable rules need to be eliminated. It is never ever possible to write laws for all time. By inserting into religious scripture and believing that GOD ordained some laws (as if God has no other business), keeps out dated laws for longer period that they should exist. In the current composition of India, a civil code, which is common for all citizens, must evolve. A global civil and criminal code should eventually evolve. Vijaya Kumar

Trying to take away the credit?
by Vivek on Aug 04, 2003 06:36 PM

BJP was the first party to ask for UCC. So far Shiv Sena and AIADMK are the only other parties to support UCC. So BJP deserves the credit for asking for UCC. They never said that there wont be changes in Hindu Laws. This author is trying to put speculative malign on BJP. And If BJP comes to power (alone) and changes the laws to suit the modern era and majority community then that shouldn't be objectionalble. Afterall Democracy is a rule of majority.

One thing more, Cow milk is one of the important food for infants and children. With our huge popultion if we start killing cows for 10-15% of people then children from 85% population will starve. Thats against the democracy. and is not acceptable.

Apart from cow Hindus have changed so many laws to suit the modern days. Population control, monogamy, sati, female education, women's rights , divorce related etc etc all laws have been changed in las 100 years and accepted by hindu community.

I was just going through ur article abt UCC its sorry to say that been called as knowledgeable person u r still not having full knowledge abt Islamic laws. Firstly u mentioned that muslims can give divorce by saying one word three times no thats not right i suggest u too again read the holy book and see what is revaled in that there are certain thing which has to be done for divorce its not just a three words these is what hindus have misconcepts abt islam. Secondly u talking abt women rights i again objects this well islam is the only religion who has given more rights to womens then in any other religion e.g one u have written in ur article abt property rights only muslims women have the shares in property, hindus or any other religion dosent have such things. Third UCC laws u talking abt 21st century should change the laws according to the time no i object for this also wat has to be change is the misunderstanding of concepts of islam from minds of hindus they are not having full knowledge of islam.I suggest u to pls read the books provided by Islamic Propogation Centre which will give u the Knowledge of islam and Laws.

Every one has the right to follow the faith he believes.

About UCC
by Vinay Soman on Aug 04, 2003 05:21 PM

Dear Amberish
What makes you think that UCC, if it is ever implemented, will be prepared by Hindus? Ours is a democratic country and laws are prepared by the elected members. So whatever laws these members introduce, they do so as the representatives of majority of the people of India, and not necessarily majority community. Now, as you say, if BJP is to make a UCC, that implies that BJP has a majority in the house. That means majority of people of India want BJP to lead the government and make new laws, as and when required. Further, why do you say that a Hindu Civil Code is a set of laws that not only show little respect for Muslims and Christians, but seek laws that reflect Hindu society at its worst, creating a patriarchal, feudal, casteist set-up. I strongly object to that. If you want to say so, then prove that first. Otherwise, some reader not much knowing about Hindutva shall have a wrong idea about it. Keep in mind, you are not writing a novel or a story but an article. You have right to your opinions but have no right to write non-facts.

On UCC by Ambarish Diwanji
by Nagesh on Aug 04, 2003 04:40 PM

The present Hindu civil code itself has got rid of many so called irrational laws from the traditional laws. Female members of the family going to courts asking for their share of ancestral property is commonplace. Hindus were and are always open to reforms.

I am happy to note that secularists like Ambarish Diwanji have conceded to the need of a common civil code. The next step is to go for a so called rational civil code. Let us see which corner the opposition comes from.
