There are several Marathi films, which have been path breakers in their time.
But afterall these are Gopalakrishnan's favourite films & I can not put a question on that. Only I can say is - he missed a lot if he never saw marathi films.

Marathi film industry and films have a curious problem according to me, to most outsiders Marathi films are an extension of Hindi/Bollywood whereas for Maharastrians it is anathema. Marathi films have had some excellent directors, actors but have usually lacked good producers and above all financiers. I don't think Adoor will think of Jabbar Patel as any less than the ones he has named and there are many others in this ilk.
The other strange thing about Marathi films is that the gap between commercial and art is almost non existent since their commercial and art films both are generally very good which is quite unlike most other industries

I watched the National Film awards a few days ago and was so happy to see good films and their promoters/actors being felicitated. Marathi films at last have come back from slumber. I wish more movies get made in Marathi and it also gets commercial success. I am a Malayali but never watch any Malayalam movie in a theater. I guess the same mindset prevails for people of other languages too.
I am a great fan of Ajay Atul and my fav song is Maayechya halwya... by Shankar Mahadevan.
