he is an arranger (we worked as an arranger with illairaja). his works are outcome of mechanical/electronic musical arrangements ... not much soul ... hardly any melody.

i never considered him a path-breaking composer ... like RD Burman / Salil CHoudhury and others ...

strangely hyped and pampered by a certain set of people in the industry.

shankar/ehsan/loy are miles ahead in terms of talent and quality of work.

rehman has greatness thrust upon him. give him a set of acoustic instruments and ask him to create a soulful melody that wud transcend time ... he will come down to his knees.

poor indian music ... has to suffer in the hands of rehman ... any which way there's a wrong global representation. rehman, by any stretch of imagination is not India's best musical ambassador (past, present or future).

You are obviosuly that typical "bong" who is trying to sound very intellectual analyzing rahman's music. According to you, the Academy, where every artiste worth his salt, aspires to visit at least once in a lifetime, has no brains. You will never ever get out of your bong "ghetto" will you ? look here buddy, the Academy Awards are the most respected, credible awards show and recongnized worldwide, including ALL developed countries, never mind what someone from from a state as dilapidated as the poorest nations in the world, thinks.

of one thing, i am ABSOLUTELY sure. If any bong had been there instead of rahman, you would have been worshipping the Academy !! we were never meant to be one country - period.

There is no pleasing the sceptics. He has done many works that were sans acoustic instruments. He is a arranger? hmm. RD Burman was panned at his time with similar words for his unusual borrowing of various instruments.

Here ARR's music from Water, hear the 'manmohana' from Jodha Akbar and so many other 'not much instrument' songs, you'll know he is a freak, who can adopt any style.

Oh BTW, what is the different between a Music Director and a composer and a arranger?

It is not as if he copied someone elses tunes and rearranged them! Agreed, he composed them on Electronic instruments, but then the same can be said of Ilayaraja, RD Burman... They all relied on wester 'orchestra'. They themselves didn't do the music like Zakir Hussain or Hariprasad Chaurasia does, and relied on other people (not a computer) to produce the music for them.

Does that make them any less music directors?

Performance was mediocre
by Dwaipayan Adhya on Feb 28, 2011 12:36 PM

A.R. Rahman's actual score for the film 127 hours was really great, and greatly suiting the theme of the movie. But his short performance at the Oscars was below par and far from inspiring, and did not reflect in any way the magic that he had created for the movie.

Sorry he could not make it to the top of grabbing one more Oscar Award. Nevertheless we Indians are proud. He is the 1st to bring Indian music into World Map. A living Legend. Nobody can even come nearer to him. All indian music directors shoudl take a leaf out of him both old & new. He is the 1st Indian music Director to get such accolades abroad.

This person does not deserve Oscar. He deserves filmfare only for Saathiya. Others do not stand in front of contemporary better films like Rangeela(Vs DDLJ), RDB(Vs Gangster, Aksar,Fana etc.) Only because of lobbying and stealing tunes from his great Guru Mr. Illyaraja he got some awards.

I really don't understand why some people are trying to project this man as the only best composer in India. If it's true, in the last 20 years of his career, he should have got all the 20 years' national awards. He got only 4. I think Ilayaraja got 4 or more. Please try to support others too. There are more deserving hands in India, unexposed and unsupported. Please stop even talking about this man.

Ilayaraja is no more great. Once i was also supporting him and felt he is greater than rahman. but that days has gone. RAHman is better than ilayaraja now.Ilayaraja most of the songs are same nowadays and had great resemblence to his old music. last 17 years ilayaraja is nowhere. He couldnt overcome rahman after rahman arrival.either he has to be in contemporary music or classical. but he delivered either one

Mr.Axxo,U have a good imaginary power. But that does not mean ur opinion is correct..He got national award for Pazhassi Raja recently. Now you will tell national awards are a joke.. What about Thiruvasagam ?It is a masterpiece even appreciated by oscar winning music directors.. So better keep quiet. Now watch for Ponniyin Selvan where Ilayaraja is working with Maniratnam..You will understand after listening to that what you missed in the last 20 odd years .. Music has no age.. He may not be doing that many number of movies.. Still people prefer to listen to Dhalapathi,Mouna Raagam,Udhaya Geetham and so on and no to VTV or Shivaji or so..

Ilayaraja is a vessel with full of contents.. He is a genius and only guys who are not confident or are not tightly talented need this kind of lobbying and marketing.. Ilayaraja does not need any of this ..So better do not shout in agony..
