dealing with a sensitive issue like euthanasia the story seems to loose its way in between. sparks of performances by the supporting cast (now the script seemed to me to have been written solely for hrithik)and the Hrithik performing almost magically the movie does have its high point particularly in portraying the pain that paraplegic or rather terminally ill patients but could have been much more hard hitting than how it presently comes across (though i have my reservations about the crowd being able to receive it appropriately in that case). Though a good attempt at dealing with tough subject but certainly not comparable to Pyaasa. But accolades to Hrithik, great performance.
an interesting screenplay and story is the soul of a movie.. visual excellence, tremendous performances and fabulous music are value adds, but cannot be a substitute for a good story and screenplay..
It is not right to generalize and say people like popkorn or pass time movies.. the proof is movies like Rajneethi or Rang de Basanti..
people always patronize a story that they can connect with.. not everyone can connect with non realistic characters and non realistic situations..
I liked Black. I went to a Cinema hall to watch it just for Big B, as I am his fan. And I liked his action, though initially he overacted. That was the only motivation to go to a cinema hall. Remove Amitabh, I would not have gone to watch the movie, based on the story line. Its not that I watch only funny movies - popcorn stuff, I watch serious ones a lot. But because of lack of time, going to cinema is rare. And I somehow am not getting inspire to go catch a movie like Gujaarish even after good reviews, because I also read that its boring. Perhaps that could be the reason for its dismal performance, even if it was good (as some say). BTW, I am watching Raktha Charitra and its a good enough movie, ofcourse of violent genre. But it didnt do well at the box office. Well, thats my taste. I think these days, there are not many movies which will appeal to people all over India. Raktha Charitra was a hit in AP, as some people there connected with its story. So perhaps the gut feeling, title, trailors, Star cast prompt (or dont) people to go to the cinema halls. And that decides the collections. They cannot be a yard stick (always) to say if a movie is good or bad, as its relative and varies from taste of people, region to region.
