A must watch to see old Madras
by Raj on Jul 09, 2010 06:45 PM  | Hide replies

A decent movie worth watching. It is a pleasure to watch old Madras, so meticulously re created. (especially the beautiful Buckingham Canal (aka Koovam) It is pity that we have completely spoiled this beautiful canal, 'Thames of Chennai') . Amy is so beautiful and so refreshing...

Koovam (Couum) flows West to East through Madras/Chennai.

Buckingham Canal starts in Andhra Pradesh and goes North to South.

They meet near the Central Rly Stn.

ABC of Madras ..
A .. Adyar river
B .. Buckingham Canal
C .. Couum river

The BC crosses the Adyar river just North of Adyar and goes past the present Tidel Park

Thanks George for the correction and the clarification. Presume we have spoiled both Buckingham canal and Cooum River(!). Only Adayar river is left without much damage...

Well, actually there is ....
1) Local challenging White over a wrestling match for land
2) Brit falling in love with the assertive local
and BTW.. am aghast at the north south divide.. There is no mention of north in the comment.. just mentioned Laagan.

"Local challenging White over a wrestling match for land"
Laagan was more of showing that we can do it too, but this was just a plain fight between two guys to settle an issue. And it's a locals game here which is being played unlike Lagaan where the game is alien to the locals. And the fight doesn't form the crux of the story unlike Lagaan. Argue which ever way you want, but it was just awesome to see the old madras shown perfectly in the movie.

Arvind,

The movie is good and am only aghast at picking north south divide for no reason.Again, i terms of aesthetics , this is good for the budgets we can afford in South India, but cannot be compared with Lagaan or Titanic as it is needless in any case.

There are so many movies made in indian cinema where a courageous young indian challenges the rude Brit..

Please dont limit only to Lagaan..

What elase can u shoot in a pre-1947 kind of movie..

We saw Sirai Chaalai where the Andaman jail was primary concept.. There is no more story left and we can just wenjoy the visuals and a nonboring storyline.. If the movie is making us engaged for 2.5 hrs and forget our other tensions, it fine..
