Actually indian films are mostly inspired from Hollywood or they steal the story of the poor writer who doesn't have powers. In this case, Chetan is very well known and respected as we read his novels. We understand Chetan sold the story and got paid, guy didn't get fair credit when film got hit. Same as Omi Vaidya, that guy done best performance still we can see always lead actors like Amir khan, SJOshi and madhavan. Not him. Instead of saying 100 lies film producer just say hey guys we are giving you the credit it is based on five point of some one we modified the story line for marketing purpose. Abhijat joshi made changes to he deserves the credit as well. Original Idea of the story should be respected as well.
All these recurring episodes show grestness of Amitabh...guy has been handelling success for last 40 years without any controversies..and look at these Khans etc...all keep getting involved in controversies...Sharkuh Khan is all packaging,no content...Amir Khan is an average actor who thinks he is Al Pacino,Salman Khan is a criminal...all are waste..they should learn something from grest actor Amitabh...
Even if you are saying that the idea is take from bhagat's book you are entitled to give him the creadit he wants. ( you can negotiate that with him. but is has right to ask for it, even it means publicity. ) I dont know what Joshi had added to to script other than shitty scene of baby delivery.. :-)

Why did Hirani & Co. avoid giving opening credit to the novel in question in the first place? After-all, the compensation to the author was already paid, the film's story or script credits needn't really be shared...so what was the problem?
Apart from commercial reasons (there maybe but, I am not smart enough to think of them), at least two other reasons jump to my mind immediately...
1.) Although quite a few scenes in the movie were "inspired" from the novel, the movie as a whole had a message very different from the novel.. I think, the novel didn't have any message. Plus the ending was pretty different. By not acknowledging the novel in the very beginning, it may be hoped that the audience that had also read the book would not anticipate the (incorrect) movie ending.
2.) By repeatedly claiming that the movie was only 5% similar to the book, it may have been hoped that the audience would not try to do a scene-by-scene comparison of the movie with the book but would instead enjoy the movie.
On a final note, I wish to go beyond mere facts and pass some judgment on the message of the movie, a message that was non-existent in the book - The movie maybe unrealistic in parts, there could be some tighter editing and all of that... but the message of the movie was FANTASTIC & ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL in these times.

we can also take it a publicity stunt which is happening behind all the Amir films. Whatever it may be, the film is good. Proper mixing of Munnabhai theme and the "5 point some one " story :D

You may want to read up on copyright and intellectual property laws. Plagiarism is very clearly defined and has nothing to do with construction. What's outrageous is that laws are loosely followed in India.
