75 Films...
by Ashok Lulla on Sep 07, 2009 05:01 PM  | Hide replies

I am staggered that Priyadarshan has made 75 films. If you allot even 6 months to one movie,
that means he must have been at it for 30 years, and that is as a Director. And if you tot up the mandatory Asst. Director years,
it's a whole life spent in being a cinematic
story-teller. Of course, he is one of a kind. And the award simply affirms this. To be honest, I wish I could--and many others here too must be wishing--have stuck so doggedly to one vocation.

Dear Ashok Lulla saheb,
All his hindi films are remake of malayalam films of other directors or remake of other foreign language films, remake of malayalam film's remake. All his recent hindi hit films are made in malayalam 20-25 years back.

Whether they are as you say, remakes of remakes, it doesn't matter to me. I am not a cinema-buff, not even an arm-chair critic. I am struck by the fact that he has made 75 films. Which is a huge output. And many of his films have been top-grossers.
I liked Malamal Weekly. To be able to transfer, successfully,
a movie from one language to another, also requires skill and creativity. Malamal had a host of characters, a lovely, picturesque
setting. The film moved at a good clip, and kept you engrossed.

John, Got his 20 seconds of fame. Ideally he should move on with another hopeless comment in another article to get 20 seconds of fame there. But this time he chose not to move on & is screaming out loud for more fame than the celeb:). Give it to him. He needs it :) :)

Yes, the budget for a malayalam film is much lower than that of Tamil or Telugu. Maybe it took only 50 lakhs to make a malayalam film 20 years ago. A fair estimate these days would be in the region of around 3 crores.

Wow..then that speaks volumes about the productivity of Malayalam film industry!

If you can produce the same output with less financial input, you are more efficient than the other dude.

You have done a wonderful job & you deserved it.When I saw Kalapani in Tamil version I thought that you are something. When I saw HeraPheri then I came to a conclusion that you are intangible. There are very few directors have fans may be you are one of them. Keep growing keep producing the moovies like Kaanjeevaram.

True, bt he also once said in kerala he can't make movies in tht budget w.wht bollywood has to offer in terms of budget. So tht's why you can get alot done in bollywood, so tht's why he came over. Honestly, there is no substitute for the actors and his actors in malayalam films ar superior than his hindi films, except for paresh rawal.

I am not biased b.c i also like his hindi remakes, bt i watched both original and remakes and the former is better any day.

Anyways, he managed to give us more of paresh rawal, good performances frm om puri, ambrish puri, jackie shroff etc.. You won't find those actors good in any bollywood directors movies.
