IndiaWINSALL,
Yes, Priyadarshan regularly steals and trashes original plots from south Indian cinema - the best example of his ability to spoil a good movie in translation is 'Billu Barber'. An excellent Malayalam original converted to a substandard hindi version.
If his Hindi films track record is to be the criterion, then he is truly an average director at best.
However, this Tamil film for which he got a National Award could be different - I agree with you. The other reason I agree with you is because from what I have witnessed in movies from the south, they tend to be more realistic (barring slapstick n cheesy exceptions) with real 'acting' pulling the movie in the box office instead of item girls, item numbers, glitzy 'foreign' locations etc.
So I am willing to give Priyadarshan a margin of 'possibility' about a super-par directorial performance in this movie that won the national award.
I havent seen the movie, so I am not yet changing my low opinion about Priyadarshan yet. However, he has been a successful money spinner in Bollywood.

Keep repeating. Useless fellow. Priyadarshan did make good movies and some of his movies are for good laugh. If you dont understand that get lost from this place and dont waste your time.

IndiaWinsall Got his 20 seconds of fame. Ideally he should move on with another hopeless comment in another article to get 20 seconds of fame there. But this time he chose not to move on & is screaming out loud for more fame than the celeb:). Give it to him. He needs it :) :)

Hindi film industry has given Priyan as much as Priyan has given to Hindi cinema....Clearly only after coming to Bollywood he shot to such great heights....Long live Priyan
I remember seeing Priyadarshan's earliest Hindi Movie - "Gardish".. the class of this Director was apparent then. The performance of Jackie Shroff that he had extracted was phenomenal.. notwithstanding that it was originally a Tamil / Malayalam movie, it remains as one of the better movies that I have seen till date..

Dear readers, All his hindi films are remake of malayalam films of other directors' or remake of other foreign language made in malayalam and its' remake. All his recent hindi hit films are made in malayalam in a period of last 10-25 years back.
If anyone thought that Priyadarshan was fit only for remakes, the blame squarely should fall upon Priyan himself. After all, 95% of his Hindi films are remakes or remakes of remakes!!! The other day during an TV interview during Onam, I heard Priyadarshan declare that his film Malamaal Weekly was his own creation. Alas, this too was a remake of an Irish film Waking Ned. Another irritant is that he not only remakes films, but also adds comedy scenes lifted from films of other malayalam directors as well. Of course, the Hindi film-going public remain ignorant of this as the chances of them seeing the original is almost nil. But to be fare to Priyadarshan, Kancheevaram washes away a lot of those sins. It is a poignant film made with sensitivity and hope Priyan surprises us with many more such films.

did Indi Audience see Waking Ned? or did they watch "Malamaal Weekly". In the question lies the answer

Very few Indians must have seen Waking Ned. But Priyadarshan must have the guts to admit that Malamaal Weekly was inspired by Waking Ned.
Priyan u rock...pls dont stop making comedies....am waiting for De Dana Dan. Akshay needs a hit and Prian will manage to do it. waiting to watch Hera Pheri 3!!!

Dear John, Most of the movies made in India are copied but not all are hits. So you sit back and think why Priyans movies are hit. For eg Short Cut was a copy of a Malayalam movie, but was that a hit. Also the Hindi movie Daddy Cool was also a copy, but again it was flop. True Priyan lifts but in that lifting also he manages to succed.
