The day when bollywood quits making movies is not too far. A good thing after all. Let Bollywood die and let regional industries like Marathi, Bhojpuri etc flourish.

bollywood should stop copying english movies or atleast stop following western footprints.. make movies for Indians... Then aim for national awards.
Happens all the time. Fantastic south Indian directors create a classic and beat Hindi masala item girl movies.
But I&B ministry will send some Bollywood masala movie as India's entry to the Oscars the next year. There will be huge excitement created in North India about that Bollywood movie. Not one channel will question why the south Indian movie which won the national award was not sent.
Then on awards nigt at the oscars Indian entry as always gets no award! north Indian channels will scream 'Discrimination' and claim that our 'Global icon' Bollywood item girls and stars are not given Oscar by Goras because they have double standards against Indians.
Little will any Bollywood director or actor or News Channel speak about 'Double standards' within India which discriminates against sending the South Indian movie that won the 'national award' to the Oscars.

Saif Ali Khan was awarded best actor award couple of years back. This is the biggest comedy of Indian film awards. Thanks to his mother Sharmila Tagore, who was in the jury at that time. Somebody should save Indian film Industry(so called Bollywood.

He already got noticed on u.s comedian jon stewart's the daily show, much like how other bollywood stars ar ecstatic abt appearing on american talk shows and indian media blowing it out of proportion.
So tht's more thn enough for an award, to get jon stewart talk about bollywood global icons. He did a good job much better thn his hosting the oscars, while talking abt beloved srk. You should check out the video, wht a tribute to srk.

the immigration officials thought this 'global icon' was some beggar trying to make a living in the US.
I wonder why these movies are given such importance and feted with awards and so-called critical accclaim. For 90 pc of India, movies are all about entertainment. Thats where commercial cinema scores and mvies like 'Love aaj kal' collect millions in a week or two. Whereas these 'art' films dont even reach the theatres and if they do, are removed within a week as no urban guy would waste his time on these so-called movies. Umashri or kareena ons creen? Its a njo-brainer as to whom the audience would rather watch.

just because you didn't see these movies.. it doesn't mean these can be called "art" movies.. there is no such category as masala or art.. it's all about beholder of eye.

Nisha..this kind of cinema is called parallel or realistic cinema and not really intended to entertain Urban folks. On the contrary, it is actually the urban audiences who watch these movies, not going to the theatre, but on DVD or at home in other words. Middle class or lower class people always go to the theatre for 'Paisa Vasool' kinda stuff like the recent blockbuster 'Love Aaj Kal' or a telugu money spinner 'Magadheera'. The parallel cinema speaks about many aspects of film making which is very high on points when the jury has to select them for awards. Our Janta doesn't understand this. Secondly, there are seperate awards like "Filmfare' to felicitate commercial hits..and I think that is the biggest award in India..just liek Oscars. So don't worry about the parallel cinema..and don't waste your time thinking why these stalwarts got those awards. Watch commercial cinema and quench your entertainment thirst.

You will be surprised most Films that win Oscar (under foreign films category) are intense films like these. Unfortunately, even though such movies win national awards in India, more than likely a masala Hindi movie will be sent by the I&B ministry as India's nomination for the Oscar and we will come back empty handed.
The day such a movie is nominated by I&B ministry, and wins an Oscar, all TV channels will begin interviewing the South indian director and his chappal and turn his lungi, chappal and his plate of 'idli sambhar' into icons with 24/7 coverage!
Till then the same channels and same north indians will keep ridiculing these classics as 'idli sambhar' south indian. And they will claim that their Bollywood 'item girl' films are 'modern' global icons.
I will be surprised if this movie is nominated for oscars...it will be some masala from Bollywood once again that goes for oscars from India.

Evn oscars don't always nominate blockbuster movies, and whn they do in terms of titanic the critics disagree w.the selection. As far the acting category is concerned, those are actors evn indian woudn't havn't heard of except whn they win the awards. Otherwise evry1 knows dicaprio, cruise, pitt.
Otherwise tom hanks and jack nicholson ar only known after their "meaningful" films, nd evry1 talks highly of their films. Otherwise most pepul still go nuts ovr pitt and cruise.
give an award to a casteist fanatical film called periyar a film full of hatred of aperson who only spread venom hatred worked against indian independence sided with the british, meaning a traitor, producer of illegal arrack, infact wanted to secede tamilnadu from India, how can a film on such a criminal traitor be given the national award. This film must have been banned in the first place
these are not national awards but nonsense awards of india....esp. since they are sarkari....and full of bias...when ajay devgan won best actor his pet director and friend prakash jha was in the jury of national awards...when saif won for an asnine film called hum tum as against swades, his m*m was chairman of the censor board of india...when kamal haasan won it in 1996 his uncle charu haasan was in the jury...beleive me its all hocus pocus awards full of bias...at least private awards go based on public liking and support for a movie not based on the whims and fancies of biased jury members........

Good one, bt evn bollywood awards ar more horrible whn selectin nominees, forget about choosing the winner. So they ar also nonsense especially iifa, tht clearly states indian international film awards.
It wud be nice to include indian instead of bollywood nd foreign films as far as international is concerned. Nope, its still nonsense from the name itself. Then this makes awards itself purely nonsense.

LOL...sour grapes. today when every tobacco, zandu balm and cola company has a phillum award, only National awards have any credibility left.
The very fact that extremely talented actors like Kamal Hassan, Mammootty and Mohanlal consistently win these awards (more 11 of them between them, I believe) itself speaks about these awards.
I get a feeing that you are upset about the Ntional awards because dear SRK did not win it this time, and the south Indian cinema, as always, cornered most of these awards.
