Gulzar Vs Satyajit

what satyajit won for his entire works in his life... gulzar won it in a few sentences of lyrics.
so who is greater..?
if gulzar entire lifetime work is considered then he must get atleast 50 oscars.

ARR Music
by chandra prakash on Mar 04, 2009 08:32 PM  | Hide replies

ARR music is so repeatative. His original musis in Roza and Bombay was great and after that he did good in Lagaan and Taal. After that it mostly sound like old music with new words. I think RD Burman music was far ahead of any other music from India. We all still listen remixes mostly based on RDB music. That proves his sense of music and what people always liked. ARR is media and so called intellectuals . He is only best at the moment but not the all time best.

The melody of old music, the level of old music which we were having has been lost, since we have not recognised and appreciated ourselves and started copying the others. We have lost our original music melodies.

hold it man....stop demeaning greats like RDB...even I am a Rahman fan but RDB music has always been at the helm of indian music and no one can tarnish that by saying he was copycat. Check out your records man...

thanks for asking for records.
Rahman is the greatest music director india has ever heard.
People just dont know how big a copy cat rdb was. there is virtually no difference between rdb and pritam.
i will just give few examples
Mehbooba Mehbooba [Film: Sholay (1975)]
Inspired from Demis Roussoss’s Say You Love Me.

2 Tumse milke [Film: Parinda]
Inspired from Leo Sayer’s When I Need You.

3 Chura liya hai [Film: Yaadon ki baraat]
Rehashed from the theme of the movie 'If its Tuesday this must be Belgium'

4 Jeevan ke har modh pe [Film: Jhoota kahinka]
Looks like it is inspired from a Azerbaijani number 'Gulsenim'

5 Dekta hun koi ladki haseen [Film: Sanam teri kasam]
Inspired from a traditional Egyptian track, 'Mustafa mustafa', made popular by Bob Azzam's French version

6 Milgaya hum ko sathi [Film: Hum Kissse sai kam nahin]
From ABBA's Mama mia!

7 Kaisa tera pyar [Film: Love Story]
From ABBA's 'I have a dream'

8 Jeevan ke din chotte sahi [Film: Bade Dilwala]
From the theme of Love Story, by Francis Lai!

9 Aao twist karein [Film: Bhoot bangla]
From the track 'Come lets twist again' by Chubby Checker!!

10 Tera mujhse hai pehle ka naata koi [Film: Aaa Gale Lag Ja]
From the track 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' by Elvis Presley

11 Phir wohi raat hain [Film: Ghar]
The opening 3 lines same as the Carpenters' song "Sing a song"
13 Tum ho meri dil ki dhadka [Film: Manzil] 13

A R Rehman copied tunes as well...

Opening tune of "Guzarish..." of Ghajini is similar to Lion King's " Who do you love? who do u need when you come undone...."

Tu Hi Tu from Kabhi Na Kabhi, sounds so much like The Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel!

Hello Mr Ethirkatchi from "Iruvar" the opening piano part is inspired by Dave Grusin’s Memphis Stomp, from the OST of The Firm

Thillana Thillana from "Muthu" track starts with the humming of an African female, which is a similar to Deep Forest’s Night Bird.

Taxi Taxi from Sakkarakatti similar to Daddy Yankes song Gasolina

Few beats in "Rangeela" and "Kadhalan" are picked from Dr. Alban's songs.

Most of his tunes also have the traces of Enigma's style of composing.

Naved,
How's that RDR "copies" and ARR "just gets inspired".
Isn't it ironic that we can change our words diplomatically to suit our arguments.
And why do you bring Bengalis into the picture? You dont have the devine right to question their originality.
I am not a Bengali FYI.
You understand one thing Naved.
Both RDB and ARR are great and they are greats of their respective generation.
While RDB still is an inspiration to many even after his time, only time will tell if ARR can also be one.
Your arguement that "RDB was a copycat and ARR was not" is not acceptable.

Hello Mr. ethirkatchi [Film: Iruvar]
Genuine copy wrt the piano intro sequence. But the actual tune of the song remains original.

2 Kuluvalile [Film: Muthu]
The rythm has been used. However, the tune of the song remains original.

Thillana Thillana from "Muthu"

Deep Forest can rip off native African sounds...

rahman never has copied any tune.
rdb has a bad history of copying tunes as has pritam.
even plagiarism expert kartik from itwofs accepts that rahman tunes are always very original.
as for insipiration.
rdb may be insipiratins for many copy cats like pritam and dasgupta.
but rahman is insipiration now wen his creativity is at its peak.
musician like amit trivedi and sel have rahman as their insipiration.
Even i was rdb and pritam fan but after hearing to the level of plagiarism that they have done.
i am forced to believe that both rdb and pritam are good rehasher and remixer. at the creativity and innovative level rdb and pritam to me are just equal to any other bollywood music director.

first of all thanx for accepting that rdb was a copy cat.
unfortunately none of songs u mentined of arr is featured in itwofs the chronicles of plagiarism.
majority of the songs arr are mere insipiration and not even one song has same tune.
arr is just inspired by genres.
but rdb copies the tune.
rdb wasnt even as versatile as arr.
all the bengali musician were nothing but a bunch of copy cats

slumdog 's success
by mg on Mar 04, 2009 07:43 PM  | Hide replies

Very good movie making feel good for every one. good for producers, award winners and also for viewers.
This should be learning lesson for Indian film makers. The slumdog movie was only 2 hrs and no dance songs or duets inbetween. If indian movies are made with these rules then it will also become great.

Do not see the award, we have already produced many movies much better than slum dog in past, which did not win oscar but still are all time favioute. The slum dog kind of movie can be seen once or twice but does not keep attracting the people for long. Do not lose the orginality or indian concepts, songs and dances (as per the movie demands) are the part of our movies and lives.

Amritraj's Statement
by sanath on Mar 04, 2009 06:35 PM  | Hide replies

"Had Slumdog Millionaire been released five or six years ago when the economy was doing very well in America and other industrialised countries," he continues, "it might not have made the kind of impact it is making now.
Today we are looking around us with disbelief how some corrupt corporations and CEO's have cheated millions."

This is exactly what many critics have been saying, that the film is a feel-good experience for the recession-hit new poverty-stricken Western population...to show that India which has been almost recession-free has slums and slumdogs that are worse than in our society.

This is the opinion of some renowned personalities on NDTV during discussion.

SDM won because
by Lokesh S on Mar 04, 2009 05:13 PM  | Hide replies

SDM won because a Brit directed it.

You like it or not, SDM was just a good movie, not deserving 8 oscars. "Salam Bombay" was much better. It too depicted slum, poverty, misery to the core.

I wonder whether SDM would have got noticed, if it was produced and directed by Indians (while maintaining same standards of production as that of SDM).

Any other music director, not necessarily A R Rehman would have won an Oscar for SDM.

With all respect to Rehman. He has produced masterpeices worth many times that of "Jai Ho".

"Any other music director, not necessarily ARR would've won an Oscar for SDM", which means it would've won only 1 oscar if not for ARR. In your own words u seem to agree that because of AR Rahman it won 8 oscars.

You seem to understand my statement the way you want to understand.
When I said, "Any other music director, not necessarily ARR would've won an Oscar for SDM" I meant that AR Rehman won Oscar just because he composed for SDM.
You got it? or you still want to pretend?

Wow, you really do believe we Indians all live in slums, dont you? What do you mean "car, air-conditioning"? Cars and air-conditioning are commonly found in India. Freida does not have to go to the US for "car and air-conditioning". She is already a model and from a decent middle-class family.
