Hum Log, and the good old days
by Haramohan Roy on Jul 11, 2009 10:05 PM

1974 - I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw anything on TV - that time it was the test match between India and the West Indies

1983 - Most people of our generation would remember this year as the year when India became the World Champion in One Day Cricket - at Lord's

1984 - The start of the historic serial - "Hum Log". In those days, TV serials were realistic and fascinating, not the types of Ekta Kapoor things!! We could identify ourselves with the characters of this serial! Moreover, in those days there were only one or two daily soaps - not like these days, when we have dozens of daily soaps - most of which are unwatchable!!

Congrats to those who recall "Hum Log"!!

I don't remember this show. Guess I was too young but I can conclude one thing at this forum. Young indian are more abusive then some of the older ones. The folks here must be in their 30s to remember this show anc comments are generally in good taste. No abuse ..good spirit..nostalgia..

Young india ..learn something

Yes , You are right , people who can recollect these nostalgic days should be over thirty. But it is wrong to put the blame entirely on the current generation. The cause of the problem lies with us also. We encourage our children to win the rat race somehow. We have failed to teach them the niceties and courtesies of life.

This was highlighted to me by my tuition students. I have heard them say many times, " Sir, if the people of your generation had taught us the good things, we would have been also polite and well-mannered ".

So it is upto us to teach them. I try to teach my students polite manners. I think I have succeded to some extent because, with the support of my students, I am accomplishing many wonders like undertaking and funding the education of some poor girls in Trichy. My students go out of the way in helping with various forms of assistance like old text books, job offers etc for these girls. For example , each year I have to do a lot of phone calls and leg work to collect funds for these girls during payment time , usually july. Last year , two of my students loaned their cell phones to me for this purpose, one students loaned me his motorcycle, another offered to pay for the petrol, and another offered to play the driver, since I did not have a driver's licence then. I was able to finish the fees payment of eight poor girls within four days due to this help from my students.

Regards,

S.Suresh,

Trichy.

Thank you very much. I am a very ordinary person.

I think it is only God's Grace and wishes and support from good people like you that enables me to do this duty. Yes I think it is a duty, a moral responsibility of everyone to uplift at least one undeprivileged human during one's lifetime.

I also get a lot of help and support from the lecturers, professors and office staff of the two of the most respected women's colleges in Trichy. They also offer a lot of support for my children in the form of lab fees, old books , free lunch tokens etc. Last semester I struggled to pay the fees even after two months after the last date. The office staff of these two colleges very patiently waited for me to pay the fees. Some lecturers offered to pool their resources to pay for my children. There are good people everywhere.

I take this forum as an opportunity to thank all of them, YOUR GOOD SELF included.

Thank you very much for your kind words.

Regards,

S.Suresh,

Trichy.

Hum- Log

It has sweet memory in people mind, still after 25- years. Because of its simplicity & intimacy with the daily problems of middle class gentry; people loved it to watch. The correctors were so realistic (not artificial like Ekta Kapoor's fools paradise).
Anyuway, thanks to re diff to recall this pleasant story again.

was probably the only serial to capture the mind set, aspirations and innocence of the indian middle class. we've lost all that in a mad rush to enjoy comforts in life.

Still remember that my whole family after dinner get prepared to see serials like subah karamchand buniyaad mungarilal ke hasin sapne
Mr Yogi khile ka rahsya surabhi etc... waiting anxiously for the start of any of these serials but now we just change channels cant get stuck on one and neither that enthusiasm is there to watch any serial or even a movie
