This is a British movie

Why is India celebrating the nominations? It is not an Indian production. Only the slums are Indian and the rest is British.

Slumdog what?

I watched this movie with great expectations this weekend, and was thoroughly disappointed. Even more disappointing was the fact that it has been nominated for double digit oscars. Compare it with any movie that has won oscars in the recent past. Each had either a powerful message, or superbly etched characters or a great story line or narration that took your breath away. The only thing that took my breath away (for the wrong reasons) was the stupid scene of the boy jumping into a pile of crap, an example of the exaggeration and hyperbole that this movie has.

In retrospect, I think Traffic Signal from Madhur Bhandarkar was far more realistic and at least had some message in it, whatever little it might have been.

It is kind of embarrassing to see the Indian Media lapping the whole thing up as if it was something that we, as India need to take credit for. Kind of makes me feel sorry about ourselves.

It is a well made movie ,which does nt bore you.Things like anil kapoor's behavior and the autograph scene is too far fledged... but Again it needed a bit of masala them to make it commerially viable.
arguments of exploiting poverty apart , it is a good movie!

Incidentally, very little from the book, in terms of actual instances have been picked up for the movie. The book was far more realistic. Even the real reason for the boy getting on the show has been changed in the movie!!!

Good movie but not a great movie

slumdog M is a good movie but not a great movie. It just like any other potboilers of bollywood movies, made so many times by our bollywood directors.Just bcoz it has been directed by a british director and the movie has been nominated in the oscars does not make it a great movie. The movie is once a watch. It has no repitation value. The movie has been making waves in the west just bcoz danny boyle has shown them the poverty, hungry and naked street childrens and of course taj mahal. This is what the west think about india. They think taj mahal and slums is the real india. I m happy for rahman being nominated for the jai ho in the oscars but honestly rahman has done some brilliant work in the past than jai ho.

What do these odds mean? Who will win?
by lakshmana murthy on Jan 26, 2009 12:32 PM  | Hide replies

I am not into betting. And I guess many others would also not have understood what 2-7odds means. The author of this article should have explained it.

Can anyone tell me what these odds mean?

2-7 means the chances of SDM winning is 7/(2 7) X 100 %, i.e. approx 77%, while the chances of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is 1/(4 1) X 100%, i.e. 20%. in bookmaking, it means that if you put 1 rupee on SDM you get 1 X 2 i.e. 2 rs your 1 rupee back, total 3. on TCCOBB, for 1 rupee you get 4 rupee 1, total 5 rupee. in short, chances of SDG winning Oscar is more than TCCOBB as per the bookies.

thanks leela,

to make it a bit more clearer..

to calculate odds:
for example 2: 7 or ( 2/7) ..

the formula is under / under upper multiplied by 100.

thfore, 7 divided by 2 plus 7 multiplied by 100 = 77% ..
