What do these odds mean? Who will win?
by lakshmana murthy on Jan 26, 2009 12:32 PM  | Hide replies

I am not into betting. And I guess many others would also not have understood what 2-7odds means. The author of this article should have explained it.

Can anyone tell me what these odds mean?

2-7 means the chances of SDM winning is 7/(2 7) X 100 %, i.e. approx 77%, while the chances of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is 1/(4 1) X 100%, i.e. 20%. in bookmaking, it means that if you put 1 rupee on SDM you get 1 X 2 i.e. 2 rs your 1 rupee back, total 3. on TCCOBB, for 1 rupee you get 4 rupee 1, total 5 rupee. in short, chances of SDG winning Oscar is more than TCCOBB as per the bookies.

thanks leela,

to make it a bit more clearer..

to calculate odds:
for example 2: 7 or ( 2/7) ..

the formula is under / under upper multiplied by 100.

thfore, 7 divided by 2 plus 7 multiplied by 100 = 77% ..

yesterday i saw this movie,it is a good movie with mixes of bollywood masala film.lots have been written about the movie depicting india in bad light, however two things appeared to me as far from reality : one, anil kapoor belittling jamal right from the time he came and occupied the hot seat- addressing him as a citizen from the slums;a chai wala etc. we have seen three episodes of "kaun baneyga crorepati" anchored by bachhan & srk both of them never taunted any of their participants or humiliated them regarding the background from which they have come. it was indecent and stinked of arrogance and class stratification.what was the censor board
doing, incase of films directed by indians our censor board becomes active whenever even a person depicts some community/religous faith.secondly how did the police arrest jamaal and hold him for 24 hrs for interrogation without any valid proof of his cheating/fraud, was there any evidence of his having answers to quiz questions found onhis person, was he having a mobile connected to someone giving him the answers. infact on what ground was the FIR lodged, was it under POTA/MCOCA etc.it is film having all the ingredients of masala. moreover the last scene "jai ho" song the entire lot of suburban train passengers in the platform start dancing,& the train waits till the dance ends- very absurd. the final say is that the film has depicted india in poor light.

Don't Hindi films belittle minorities. How they present sterotype sikhs (un par joke marna), Christians, Muslims....
Or the typical pandits, Zamindars, Baniya, Harijans...
It is a movie only. If there is no villian in a movie, how good it is.
How can you compare it with real life eposides (if srk and amitabh didn't insult any one on their show, does that mean you can't show Anil Kapoor as arrogant).
Also don't police detain people without any proof. come on..where do you live. This can happen in US also.
And last not the least...Dancing around tree, train, bus, this happens all the time in hindi movie...SDM is only a bollywoodish hollywood movie....
Can a movie tarnish the image of India in this age of internet???

asli bharatwasi, a message to you

I appreciate and acknowldge your concerns about India. If there is a way for me to contribute to you, I probably will. I am not a driven-for-a-cause person like you, it is my shortcoming; I hope someday I dedicate my life to social causes.

I want to help retired gentlemen to find a cause for themselves. Where do I look?

Cool, good to know this. I do my little bit, as I mentioned by teaching kids, encouraging people to educate their kids, specially girl children, avoid dowry, avoid giving bribe and escalate their voices to higher authorities(my wife is making rounds of PF office in Delhi these days to get her PF transferred to her savings account, she has to do this because she isnt offering a bribe!!) and by trying to follow traffic rules, even if I am on a cycle rickshaw, I insist that the rickshaw puller doesnt jump the red light(It happens very often in Noida, Delhi, Gurgaon region)..I do my little bit, you may perhaps help the retired gentlemen to learn some yoga, either by helping them watch some dvds/cds. By keeping themselves involved in improving their health, they will be more independent. I am doing my little bit, so I apologise for my ignorance if I havent been able to answer your question. Even offering your seat to ladies in a crowded bus can be a good gesture sometimes!

Movie is British
by BR on Jan 26, 2009 01:28 AM  | Hide replies

Actors may be Indian. But if director was not British, no one would have picked it for Oscars. Oscars loves anything British.

Only Indian feature in the awards nomination was Rehman. To us Indians, his music was not his best. Hie best is Roja, Swades, Saathiya and Bhagat Singh, and the national anthem.

But I can understand why his music got picked as 'oringinal score', as it truly is original to western ears.

If Amitabh cannot understand why this movie is in Oscars, he should re-watch his own Black.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali was not making even a Filmfare award worthy movie, much less Oscar worthy.

If anything coul dhave made Slumdog better would have been if Irrfan was nominated for a Best Supporting Role. This guy is something.

And Thanks to Loveleen Tandon, the movie had excellent screenplay.

SM isnt bad
by asli bharatwasi on Jan 25, 2009 10:17 AM  | Hide replies

Despite showing the darker side of India and exaggerating facts a bit, I dont think that we should criticise the movie for this reason only. The fact is that:
1) Our 40% ppl live such a life. If you have never been outside your metro, visit some of the smaller towns and villages of India too.
2) We dont have clean drinking water in taps. We all purchase drinking water in metros.
3) Our roads are amongst the worst in the world. Our ppl on roads are amongst the rudest, everyone owning a car thinks that any pedestrian doesnt have a right to walk at all on the road.
4) Ppl get pleasure in jumping red lights on traffic signals/
5) Our 90% bureaucracy, police, military, medical and political machinery is corrupt.
6) Our judicial system sucks.
7) We are extremely bad in sports and specially those which involve physical strength. We make superstars out of kids like Irfan Pathan so soon that they screw up their careers.
8) We cant enter any govt hospital without covering our nose because they are so dirty.
9) Nobody wants to help anybody. From an autorickshaw wala to that vegetable vendor, everyone wants to fool you and extract money out of you.
10) Criminals are never given punishment on time, specially the powerful ones like Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan, Lalu Yadav almost never ever.

Yes, I do take efforts. Smbody replied back he gave 2.75 lacs as tax as his contribution to the country while criticising me!! First to answer him, I have donated atleast 4 times more than him in taxes and I dont consider that as contribution. To answer you now, I teach kids in villages, give computer education for free to small town kids. I never offer bribe, even if it means my task takes 5 times longer than it would otherwise have. I dont give money to beggars but ask them to do some work, only then I give them money.I can of course not take on the politicians and police or bureaucracy. I hope you are satisfied now. And isnt all that was shown in the movie true? DO you rather want to feel proud of KJo movies where SRK drives Beneteley and wears Armani suits and lands at his mansion in helicopters? Man, this Slumdog is the truth of the nation. We have shortcomings and there is no shame in admitting that even if the world watches us. The responsibility each of us have is to avoid littering in public, educate others , avoid bribery, discourage begging and other ideas that you may have.

Great to hear that you have donated 2.75 lakhs. But I am confused. Do you mean the taxes...
If you are calling taxes as donation, you are being naive. Don't the same corrupt government provides you security, road (where present)and .......

asli bhartwasi,
Poverty scenes were not more than 4 or 5. The WHOLE movie was based on Sexual molestation, child abuse, child labor, sale of under age girls, public abuse in the hands of police and HOPE against all odds.
It is shocking to find out that everyone is trying to avoid the subject of physical and sexual abuse of under age kids.

I dont care whether this movie wins an Oscar or not. It was an average movie, westerners love to see poverty in India, we are a poor nation, reasons I have already mentioned above. My only point is that criticise this movie for being an average movie with average story, poor acting by the lead cast etc, not for showing Indian poverty, because indeed thats the fact where women use open toilets with their children guarding outside bcoz the toilets dont have doors.
