people criticizing slumdog movie should stick to films like
'kabhi khushi kabhi ghum' where fake portrayla of Indians
was depicted..son landing from helicopter to meet his parents
who are residing at palace [bigger than 'Buckingham']..
bigB was part of that film..so go watch it..

Name itself is humiliating

Guys I recognise the big Time poverty in our Country and watched this Film as well. But to adress People living in dire Circumstances with the word Dog is insult to Humanity. The Movie is getting attention because it's directed by English Idiot who will show unrealistic Scenario like this Kid covered with S**t asking for Photograph from BigB. Hope we become selfsufficient and make Movies on their dark Side someday and design our own Oscars. God must help us!

i agree that "slumdog" is not a indian word. but what we do? we(indians) treat people who are in slum as dogs. which one is more insulting to humanity. calling someone dog? or treating them?

and what are talking about? is it unrealistic that the boy is shown in shit to just get autograph from big b? you think its unrealistic? do you live in india? do you even care to read news/watch tv? do you remember the rediculous coverage given to ash-abhi marriage by media? what explaination do you have for this? give me a break.

i dont know if you realize what life is. how life can be difficult. the turmoil in mumbai, uncertaintity of life in mumbai and all human emotions...everything is shown so well. there is no climax. and please dont insult those poor people by saying that it is just a "unrealistic scenario". coz its not a joke. its not a fiction. it is a reality and lived many millions in india.

if you problem with people who dared to show it..then complain about those people. dont insult the tremendous struggle of people living in slums.

and i dont think it shows india down. that was never a goal. its about human emotions. this could happen in any poor country.

Danny Boyle has also made a similar scene in the movie "Trainspotting" made in 1995 in which the hero Ewan Mc Gregor goes into the commode in a worst toilet in Scotland to get back his 2 drug pills... No wonder Danny has repeated the same here... guess he likes to jump himself 1 day into the s**t hole....

I dont know why this film is being targetted so much. The movie is depicting a realistic scenario in India. Why cant u masala-movie lovers just see that, rather than worrying about the status of the country???

Comin to Mr. Big Bore.. oops.. Big B!! :-)
2 years ago, a movie called Traffic signal released. It was also based in the slums, and told stories of beggars. Where was Amitabh bachchan when that crap released??? That was a joke of a depiction of the slums of bombay. I hate to admit it, but what was written in the Guardian is almost correct. We cant take the fact that it had to be a non-indian who had made a movie that really depicts the life of a slum dweller in mumbai!! You think a director like Danny Boyle would make spend so much on a movie just to ridicule India??? He is showing us another side of India that we chose to ignore. He is telling us that, a slumdog can also become a successful person.. Why isnt that aspect of the movie coming out to all the haters of this movie???
Appreciate the movie guys. Lets cheer the movie for the Oscars, now that TZP is out of the race.. Screw Big B. Watch the movie and i am sure u will like it

I do not undertsand why Indians hate gritty movies. Is that a fictional slum they are showing? No. Do the kids not exist in the real slums? Yes. Actually, ladies and gentlemen you live in a fictional world by watching most Bollywood movies. Everything is shot in Europe, all stars are dressed in Western brandnames? Is that reality to you? So watch reality and accept the world as how it is. And yeah, try to change it. Whining about India's tarnished image does not count.

You guys are out of your minds...this movie is a very good movie and best one that we have seen in a long time. I guess you guys missed the point. The movie was about struggle in everyday life & hope that keepa this people going. They are down but not out. I hope you were also embarrassed watching Ghajini. Since, no originality and was a copy of a film. It is hearting to see these issues on film but these do exists and what is worse that will happen maybe some one will offer to lend a hand.
This movie didn't just nominated because of Boyle(he's nobody to audience in US) but because it deserves. He has to be given points for making movie with low budget, no name actors and still is talks for Oscars. I'm just ashamed that this movie was made by an Indian but maybe they too thought that it would be embrassing and the movie won't make any money. BTW i'm loving the Pinto is carrying herself at this big awards. By far much better rep than Ashwariya.

I completely agree. This was a movie about the happiness the kids share even though they are in the slums...They are still one entity..The kids in the slums were having a great time despite their living conditions. This movie was not meant to disrespect them but to show them in a positive way.

Dinesh,

I was born and brought up in the states. I do know how it is. You can't let few's ignorance judge everyone else. Maybe they promote the movie they was Foxsearch is promoting this movie. It's all bout promoting your movie to western world and letting them know that it is their for them to see. What do i need to wake up from? I think it's you who can't come in terms with harsh reality of India!!!I'm also a NGO worker who goes to Mumbai to teach kids english 4weeks a year. I have seen this life on first hand. Maybe you need to go visit the slums next time your are in india and maybe you will appreciate this movie!!!

Kajal!! You will understand the western attitude towards india only if you live and work with them for a while. There were so many indian movies taken in past a person from ordinary background progressed in the life.If they tell something good about india it is purely because of political and business reasons .Most of the indian are emotional we would just speak what we have in our heart .Wake up !!

What a shame ! form big b to every indian ( living in cities) are just crying that why did west see them as poor. India is a third world country and it looks really dirty to westreners. Sorry Mr big B Slums like india doesn't exist in the west and on THE TOP you can't touch a child in west. Parents get arrested for hitting kids forget about strangers and police hitting/ abusing kids. In west you will not find anyplace where under 18 girls are for sale. Indians have no idea of sexual molestation. In India/ pakistan we celebrate affairs and sex with under 18. For west it is statutory rape. In west,No one shit and piss on streets. I don't know why big B an dother are stuck on poverty here.
