yeah right! 90% material about india are poverty porn
by slash five on Feb 25, 2009 01:20 AM

what else ? city of joy, slumdog, white tiger, and the list goes on and on and on.

there is simply no other theme or story or a movie about india. poverty is as much a part of india as its of china, russia, heck even usa. every country has plenty of pooor people.

but the recipe for a booker, an oscar or any of those "exotic" and firangi award is poverty raw underbelly shown as everyday instances that happens ALL over india ALL the time.

Foolish article by Arthur J Pais.

All my british colleagues luved the film. They saw it once again with other set of friedns.

This guy has given Slumdog 2 stars and now defending his rating by providing these foolish artcile... pathetic and childish attempt Mr. pais.

Only obased on box office performer one cannot win oscars ... if it was so "Dark Knite" is a universal hit ... it didnt win best picture...

So stop giving foolish excuses of why you were wrong about rating given to this film.

Well I'm an Indian living in India and I liked the movie....India has slums so I dont see ne problem in depicting realtiy....thr've been movies made on underbelly of other countries also...
If the sight of slums worries ppl, thn they shd do sumthing to remove the slums, rather thn bashing ppl making movie on it.....

Creativity shd not be chained.....movies shd b made to depict reality and that wat SM does...

of course they will love this movie. That is nothing unusual. After they are not indians right. It is always nice to see others in a mess rather than see the mess within ourselves. All these countries have not half our population. They too have their share of poverty, child abuse, what not. Had their population grown to our proportions, they would have a war by now. If they say it is a good movie, it's fine. But we Indians can't say that. There is nothing more shameless than that. And I don't think we should glamourise poverty.

Nowhr does movie glamorize poverty....
Neone who'se understood movie, wud knw tht movies talks abt rise of a person frm humbkle beginnings to becoming a millionaire bcause of his spirit and zeal for life...

I think every1 shd learn frm th movie....tht no matter how hard the circumstances, everybody cn rise to greatest heights, if they can work towards their dreams.....

I completely agree with you Ruchi. I think most people who are commenting on this negatively are the ones who has not seen the movie. It is quite a different feeling once you have seen it. It is indeed a uplifting movie and it is one of the most beautiful romantic movie you will come across. I rate this movie much higher than most hindi commercial movies because they do not capture the essence of India like Danny did in his movie.

To Shivaji's question about Lagaan
by joe v on Feb 24, 2009 08:20 PM  | Hide replies

ok, For Lagaan to be considered for an oscar,

1. The movie should be english primarily
2. The in-movie songs should not exist(The academy doesnot like this except for full time musicals)
3. Sports movies are very common in Hollywood and i dont think a movie like Lagaan has any "wow" factor considering that those guys have seen plenty like "remember the titans", "Charriots of fire" etc

It will be a disaster if we go english. look at the hundreds of idiots who turned beggers after trying to become english rock stars from India. Hindi is a popular medium now and many abroad in Africa,Middle east and Asia Pacific sees hindi films for not the language but for the sheer colour, songs and other glamour, and that credit you will have to give to Indian film makers. We are a truly international film industry may be second only to hollywood. That itself is a great achievment and am sure the acceptence level of our movies will only grow higher from here.

yeah, bollywood is a very good recipe after hollywood. the market is immense, and with growing affluence in india, pakistan, the gulf, etc - it can only mean that bollywood will grow bigger.

there already are great movies being produced. far cry from the subhash ghais' and formula movies.

and went on to win 8 Oscars, but Lagaan couldn't...though it entertained more Indians worldwide. If Lagaan had an American or European producer and crew, could the story have been different ?

was the article meant for that ? I'm just reacting to the article, nothing to do with SM's achievment, no doubts to that. It points out how the movie survived negative reviews and oppositions to become a winner. At one point of time, the original producers dissassociated them with the project. Without doubting the film's merits, I was just wondering had it been some Indian product with the same quality, what could have happened ?

Lagaan was against the British. So no one from there would have produced it.
