It is a fact -show india as they want to believe and see it. Win!
by C Kr on Feb 25, 2009 01:44 PM  | Hide replies

Show a movie about India's economic growth, urbane crowd, a story about wealthy, educated youngsters that are successful (also a reality in india) - No One will acclaim it at the academy, nor in the western audience.

they will applaud only what they want to see. they want to see india's rotten underbelly (also a reality). India is in charge of slums and poverty to them, not glitz - some other countries own that.

abe bewakoof,

u know only to critisize anything.
i think what shown in the film is too realistic. i am not saying that the one community shown in the roit is as vilen BUT from the individual point of view of the protogenist (HERO) the roits are vilen.

OTHER thing it is a movie shown from ones own view. it is adopted play (based on Q&A) Keep all your idalisam aside and watch the movie, IT IS VERY FAST SHARPLY EDITED PERFECTLY DIRECTED AND CENIMATOGRAPHED MOVIE. i agree rehman had given a lot more and better than this one BUT this is his first recognision on international platform. I am sure his previous work will be appriciated in future. IF U DONT LIKE IT THEN IT SEEMS U DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABT MOVIES.

Slumdog is Western Dog
by bn yalamalli on Feb 25, 2009 12:20 PM  | Hide replies

Let us forget for a moment whether SMD condemns India or not.Its story, performances, music and songs are ordinary, not Oscarworthy,if you want to treat Oscar as worthy. The nominations and rewarding are politically motivated. It is a story of fantacy without any message.
There were better entries from India itself before.
Now coming to India's pride, the west (including some Indians)wants to enjoy condemning India before it emerges as a super power along with China. The world does not dare to condemn China in the same way as the pseudosecular / pseudointellectual Indians do not dare to condemn Muslims compared to Hindus.
Some Indians want to make money out of this.

Forget about the slums and poverty. Why has not a single Indian been shown in a positive light in the film?

You didn't answer my question.

The director easily found an excuse to show a white woman as kind and generous in a scene, but every single Indian in the movie is shown as some kind of a monster (when he is not the victim). I can understand why the whites are going ga ga over the movie, but Indian jumping with joy? God help!

Govenment in India always try to hide many thing which bring bad name for Government but atleast now many lives will change. Though still there is not complete solution to problems of slums in India but at least some attention will be paid and poor people will benefit to some extent.

Oscar Awards
by indira on Feb 25, 2009 11:24 AM  | Hide replies

All the media went ga ga over the runaway success of the film at the oscars. What they have not understood was that the film got so many awards because it was directed and produced by westerners though it was set in Indian backdrop. I doubt whether it would have so many awards had it been produced and directed by an Indian. As for ARR , though I am a great fan of him , I don't think this is his best. He had more superior works to his credit.
Our media never gives such wide coverage for our national awards. I don't understand why do we alaways want accolades form the west for whatever we do. Even ARR ( The Hindu) has told that, Anjelina Jolie, Spielberg and Penelope Cruz congratulated him and treated him as their equal. Why should he have this comlex? He is much more talented. Unless we believe that, we are second to none, ae will always have this sort of complex.

"I doubt whether it would have so many awards had it been produced and directed by an Indian."
When in doubt- pray!

And it's easy to assume and contemplate and say if this was done..that would've happened!! Blah! I want to know about one Indian film of recent times that deserves an award..or stand along with these other films to get an award.
It's like me winning races in my town but when i compete with people from all over the state i'm last of the last.

Criticising is very easy. To appreciate great work need great heart. We should work hard to achieve that level of success instead of finding fault with such a great work done by others from foreign countries.

unlimited imagination of boyle
by rumno mukherjee on Feb 25, 2009 11:23 AM

The exhilaration and pride of watching Indian stars led by the distinguished, noted, established film star and director Anil Kapoor lasted just until one saw the movie. Alas, the shame and disgrace projected of this great nation with its rich culture and heritage would put any sane educated Indian citizen to run for cover. For one who has operated for over two decades in the Mumbai International Airport, both as crew and as passenger, it was horrendous feeling deep within to see it being portrayed as an airfield that has kids playing cricket besides the runway with aircraft taking off !! Which airfield in the world does this happen at? Forget human beings, even animal and birds straying on the airstrip are prevented at great costs. Mumbai airport is one of the oldest International airport and has always maintained amongst the highest standards required by world civil aviation agencies. Worse still, the area is shown to have ‘makeshift’ toilets with early morning queue by slum dwellers. All airfields are ‘prohibited areas’ and portraying something that is untrue is not only unethical but in poor taste. The icing on the cake is surely the poor slum dweller who finds himself latched inside the ‘makeshift’ toilet and has to dive into the very pit he was defecating and swim through the sewer lines, melee through the crowd dripping in “muk” to meet his favourite filmstar and idol………only for an autograph that is subsequently pawned by a friend of his for five cents!!! One wonders a

Exacly!!!"with a mentality of people like these, we will never progress."
Mr. vaithialingam sivakumar wants to know the use of Oscar for a common man. He doesn't understand that Oscars-Academy awards are for acknowledging/appreciating work of the filmmakers(which is a job/profession) from all over the world. It's like Mr vaithialingam sivakumar getting an award in his office for excelling in his field which obviously is not on TV..but if it was..i'm sure everyone would ask the same question as Mr. vaithialingam sivakumar is asking now.
But well, Television is an invention. It shows films. Some people got to work in those films so we see something we could relate to and not some black/blue screen. And then when they get appreciated for the work they do..the ceremony takes place in their office which could be termed as the TV!lol.
Argh! Am losing the plot. Hope you get my drift.
P.S. Mr. vaithialingam sivakumar you also have a chice to not watch the Oscars, not have a TV.

Filmmakers have a right to show anything
by Michael Slater on Feb 25, 2009 11:07 AM  | Hide replies

Filmmakers have a right to show whatever they want, as long as its within the decency limits (and if its not decent - mark it as X-rated). In Indian films, we so often show white women as very promiscuous, with no values. They have the license to present whatever image of India they want, and its not like they're making stuff up, this is what goes on in India.
I personally think Slumdog is a good movie, definitely not worthy of getting 8 oscars, and there are tons of Bollywood movies better, and the only reason its doing so well is because it is exotic for Westerners, and because they need a feel-good movie in a time of economic recession, and depression in the public mood. I couldn't understand a few things in the movie - how Jamal speaks British English, and how they teach the Three Musketeers in government schools.
