I think that these bollywood superstars and directors are sore and jealous that they haven't even been able to get a single oscar nomination for their films all their lives except for lagaan. Grapes are sour if you don't get them after all. It might be shameful but we know how corrupt and brutal the cops are and how the poorest of the poor live among filth and shit in India. These so called bollywood greats like Shubash Ghai and Karan Johar makes crap movies which are based in exotic and posh foreign locales. If they are so proud of India, why don't they film the song sequences among the filth and slums in India. Truth hurts, doesn't it? And now when a foreigner makes a film about India they lament and complain. What hypocrisy is this? All those who hate this film love nonsense Indian masala films if they are filmed abroad as long as it contains big actors like shah rukh, amitabh etc. But shooting dance sequences in foreign locales and showing our actors in designer clothes as successful businessmen is not enough to earn an oscar. Remember a coin always has 2 faces both beautiful and ugly. Bollywood is living in the beautiful fool's paradise where as Danny Boyle showed the real face of India
Oscars can do with a shit carpet in place of red carpet for people going ga ga over shit and slums. As a theme, there can be slums with real slum people imported from Dharavi with their real attire adorning the slums. It will have a real feeling and a fitting tribute to Slumdog millionaire and India.

This was very hurting that u involved our country in this. Yes we might be lacking back in the financial run... but still we are the best probably u are jelous that the indian movie is doing so good and coming close to a Oscar... i hope u know what u write... please dont involve any country state language or religion in this...
Guys, I think it was a good movie, though not exactly worth all the hype that surrounds it. One thing all of us can swear with hands on our heart that the concept was exciting - perhaps the credit for this should go to Vikas Swarup who authored the book Q&A on which this movie is based. There is an entire set of audience who were taken aback by the "reality" of slums depicted in the movie. My argument if favor of the movie - "Well, it is far from realtiy. Because reality is far worse." Also, the slums that were shot in the movie is in a flashback (retro), the scenes depicting India's present should make them proud - Hira Nandani in Mumbai. Remember the dialogue - "Today India is the centre of the world. And I, I want to be the centre of the centre." So people, relax. It is a movie. Enjoy it for what it is. As for Oscars - Screenplay deserves one and another for Resul Kutty's sound mixing. My hunch is that Rahman will also bring home one of the statuetes...but frankly, haven't we heard better works of the bloke ?
forget that slumdog was made by a foreigner...just see it as a film...isnt it a good film ...oh yes IT IS...irrespective of who made it..i hope it sweeps the oscars
First its like a normal Bollywood Masala Movie. There are lot of scenes in this movie that degrade India. Also There are some scenes which I don't think happens in India
1. Child Jumping to Shit to view Amitab. Is it Funny ??? 2. Anil Kapoor is overacting 3. Hero asking the host whether he is Nervous 4. How can a Man answering in a famous TV show can be arrested for Cheating ???? Is it funny? 5. Th Hero is using CALL center machine to contact his old friend. Will the foreigners think that their data is not secure in India? It can affect BPO works??

Come on buddy. My opinion seems to contradict each and every point made by you. The child jumping into human excreta to get an autograph was the best scene. It shows the determination and will. Anil Kapoor's performance was measured becuase that is the way his character was scripted a vicious self centered person, who din't want his crowning glory of rising from the slums to get hijacked by someone else - so the arrest. One question, why are people watching this movie as though they are being judged according to what is showcased there? I have a few foreigner friends who loved the movie not becuase of povery - they liked becuse they loved watching India emerge out of poverty. The resilience.

You're right Sachin. I don't understand Senso's comments ! The movie clearly depicts the victory of good over evil.. n the characterization was perfect to a T.. My bet is that it will sweep out the awards on 22nd
The character of Dev Patel is one of being the underdog and that underdog happens to be from the slum. I can't understand all the criticism and protest. One must read Q & A The director has done an excellent job of bringing out the best of his cast. My only wish is that besides Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan and Dev and Freida the other cast members should be taken to L.A for the Oscars by the studio and producers and let them have their moments of fame walking on the Red Carpet , attending the Oscar function and getting to tour the City and the Hollywood studio. And sure they should get some bonus money as the movie has done quite well at the box office.
I grew-up in Mumbai and the railway track side slum is something everyone in Mumbai sees and experiences. Or the people in other parts of the country also must be seeing the same in different shape or form. Why would we want to see the same thing on the screen and pay for it? For westerners these are not something they see, I won't be surprised if some westerners get touched by the movie and come over to Dharavi for the movie.
Re: There's a reason why we don't want to see such movies

Its not that... we may see all the slum kids everyday... but we don't really interact with them about their life and problems. This movie shows a life of a bright kid who grew up in slum, faced a lot of problems in life, but he wins a lot of money and gets his love of life. Its heart warming and sometime brings to tears and laughter. You don't have to be western to appreciate the movie, this movie can touch the heart of any human.

I totally agree...Slumdog is as Indian as the British Raj was...even now we kiss gora chaddis! Wake up India and be proud...why wanst Jodhaa Akbar sent to the Oscars or Black?
goin thru the game show.with pressure mounting upon the audience how will he know the next answer..one is reminded of lagaan , abt the run chase..But definitely, its a splendid movie..
