i think every one is unique and has got best to offer, but comparison do no good. lets enjoy the best of music. Rafi sb, is the legend and mahendra kapoor was best, inspite of lesser opportunity/chances he got to sing.

Off all the great names like Mukesh, mannadey, Mahendra kapoor,Rafi etc. The best was Kishore kumar, he didnot had any formal training of music/singing but he was able to produce awesome songs.
he sang songs based on complicated ragaas and produced them exactly.
He indeed had Godess saraswati sitting on his toungue.
Truely awesome person and singer...

When I was growing up, all these singers gave us life and made us love India and our way of life. Rafi, Kishore, Hemant, Mahendra, Manna, Lata, Asha etc - hats off to them!

I resprct Raju Bharatan as a chronicler but this is by far the worst kind of read. I have lost all respect for the writer. I loved Mahendra Kapoor's songs too. But this article is very mediocre and if I may say so bitchy.

Vishwajeet Kulshreshtha
A great singer with an Original Voice
by Vishwajeet Kulshreshtha on Oct 01, 2008 07:53 PM

In today's remix world of music in which coping other people's work which could a copy too, orignal voices are hard to find. Mahendra Kapoor was one such voice. No comparison with anyone, but "Jiske sapne hamain", "Jeevan chalne ka naam", "Chalo ek baar phir se", "Adha hey chandrama..", "mere desh ki dharti..", "Om jai jagadish hare..." and many more just confirm that he had a voice of his own. No wonder lately he did not get too many opportunities. In recent memories, his name shall remain synonemous to "Mahaaaabhaaaarat..." chant.
May his soul rest in peace.

No Comparison

He imitated Mohd Rafi. You can't compare imitators with legends like Kishore Kumar Saab, Hemant Kumar Saab, Manna Dey Saab, Mukesh Saab and Mohd. Rafi Saab.
he never kept Rafi on this toes. What a stupid title. Anyways he was a good singer. May his soul rest in peace.

Ramesh Kapoor

I agree. In this context why are we forgetting the great gazal singer Talat Mehmood, although Mohammed Rafi was my favorite. Mahendra Kapoor, in an interview, with TVAsia, admitted that he was a disciple of Mohammed Rafi and as such how he could keep his own guru on his toes.

If i remember it right, Mahendra Kapoor very proudly use to claim that he is the only one who had to previlage of eing Mohd rafi disciple. If that is true than how could he keep his own Guru on his Toes?
This article is definetly very bitchy.I don't know who is actual culprit here, the writer of REDIFF.
No doubt mahandra Kapoor was also a great singer and some of his songs are ever green.they feel as fresh today as they were 40 years before and we love them. But to admier his singing, no one should run down other great singers, like Rafi, Mukesh and Mana Da.
Some of manna da songs are so difficult and melodious that no singer will ever sing as good as he did

no doubt a very good song ...but his range was limited. and he tended to imitate Rafi saab. Can say a poor man's Rafi.
To date I have never heard a newcomer wanting to sing like him ...vis a vis rafi who we all know is revered and sung by Sonu nigam. But Kapoor was a good singer too.

Mahendra Kapoor

Thanks Raju Bharatan for this wonderful article. But, please no comparison between Mohd Rafi & Mahendra Kapoor. Both were greats & had their individual style. It's like comparing Sunil Gavaskar & Sachin Tendulkar. My favourite from Mahendra Kapoor's Hindi Songs is 'Tum agar saath dene ka vaada karo...' from Hamraz. May the departed soul rest in peace.
