I am radio listener since mid-50's and also had interest in tv since its begining. LB listener's bulletins has very interesting knowledge. Raju Bhartan is well known name. Singer has his own or different voice and I can not compare with others and for specific songs. Even Talat Mehmood was taken otherwise.
wow..great coloum.!! i myself a big fan of Mahendra Kapoor..mahendra ji ko wo jageh nahin mili jise wo deserve karte the..mujhe hamesha se hi unki aawaz Rafi se behtar lagi hai..aawaz ko jis uchaai par wo le jate the,,"usko nahin dekha hamne kabhi...","jeevan chalne ka naam..","dil karda yaara dildara mera dil karda.." jaise gaanon mein unki aawaz ek aam aadmi ki aawaz lagti hai,,lagta hi nahinkoi singer gaa raha hai...yehi unki greatness thi..Mahendra saheb ki aawaz amar thi aur amar rahegi..
Mahendra Kapoor was a great singer, but can't understand how comparison with Md. Rafi comes. Rafiji was cannot be compared with any body. He can be compared with himself only, like Kishor Kumar,Hemanta Mukherjee,Manna de, Lataji,Ashaji,GitaDutta,Pankaj Mullick, Saigal,Mukeshji,Talatji etc. Each and every has his own style,in which they are matchless. To pay respect to some one we should not put the other down. Some one may like the songs of a poarticular singer. That does not mean that the rest are worse. Please pay respect to the legendary singers, actors, writers, painters and the stars of any other field.Pl. don't glorify any body by insulting other. Satyabrata Mukherjee. Kolkata

Lots of comments, most of them quite right. But I'll just go with Satyabrata's writing. All of them were great with distinct styles. I listen to all of them, enjoy all of them.
MK was a trained and good singer with a full throaty voice. He has sung memorable songs. But it is unfair to compare him with Rafi or Kishore who got better and more opportunities under great music directors, who had their own preferences. So each of them were great in their own way. No one has mentioned Mukesh in this thread. Can any one compare Mukesh with MK and arrive at any conclusion. Both were great in their own way. Let us enjoy the songs of all these singers and forget comparisons.
Any singer only gives voice to the composition. To say that the voice is greater or bigger than the comparison is to take away the credit of many others who have contributed to the final song.

It is righjt that Mahendra kapoor was a great singer, but with due respect I may add that he could not match the greatness and range of rafi saheb, whom Kapoor himself considered as his Guru. Kapoor was Kapoor while Rafi was undoubtedly the greatest singer of Hindi Cinema, The Gulookar-e-azam.
It is a matter of pride for the Rafi fans that successful singers like Mahendra Kapoor, Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam, are compared to him. Those who are not compared(Kumar Sanu and Babul Supriyo) just vanish. Surely Rafi is the benchmark. Still I warn Bhatrajan not to use phrases like "The man who kept Rafi on his toes". That is too bold.

Rafi is incomparable! Sanu had most numbers of hits during 90's and he possessed much weight in his voice! Sonu could not make it a way during Sanu-Udit realm, only got way when Sanu-Udit numbers were died down!

"The man who kept Rafi on his toes" - too ridiculous! Kapoor was never ever popular like Rafi or Kishore nor did he have such quality of them!
I have a pen and paper, so I cannot write bullshit!
Personally, my choice is Rafi Saab over all male playback singers, past or present, and maybe the future. Rafi Saab sang across all genres -- pop, classical, melody, patriotic, devotional, ghazal, etc., and his voice suited just about every actor during his time. Many of his songs were complex compositions, but Rafi Saab sang them with a great degree of smoothness and ease. MK had a wild shriek in his voice which was far from gentle. I think the closest to Rafi Saab's voice today is Sukhwinder's and Suresh Wadkar's.

This is the second article by this so-called journalist which I have read that distorts the truth. Maybe Raju is paid for his articles by the number of website hits or responses from people like us? As far as the facts go, I think Mahendra Kapoor would have told Mr Bharatan where to go if he was still alive. As an example of such gutter press tactics, I recall a 1970 Filmfare Magazine article stating that Kishore Kumar was the greatest male singer India had ever produced. The following issue there was an advertisement placed deriding the articel and stating that no one can match Rafi Sahib. Who was the author? None other than the great Kishore Kumar!
Let's face it, Raju Bharatan does nothing but make up facts and because he was around at the time he has an air of credibility. Well, Naushad Sahib NEVER had a bad word to say about Rafi Sahib to anyone so why would he talk to this man and why would Mr Bharatan keep it to himself for so many years? As fot his article, if Mahendra Kapoor Sahib was still with us, he would respond as he did in all his interviews by stating that he has nothing but the utmost repsct for his "ustad". Remember Rafi Sahib only ever took one student and that was Mahendra Kapoor Sahib.
Shame on you Mr Bharatan - please try to make an honest living if you can.
