i think KJ makes super kool movies not cos he takes me to dreamland but he makes me believe in happiness.And that is reason we all watch movies To feel happy n forget about all worries.Who can disagree this!!!
I work in a multiplex and very much subscribe to the views that the 'masala' flicks when they work well are the chief revenue earners. It's not too tough a math to figure that one out - you need hits to make up for duds.
However i believe (being one who doesn't enjoy such 'masala' flicks) that the disappointment lies in the fact that the 'escapism' is the way to make commercial cinema. Having watched all sorts of flicks, including some brilliant eurpoean/hollywood movies and being witness to the response of the audience, i believe there is tremendous potential to make realistic cinema that will work with the masses. Importantly, make masala but make it authentic - with powerful storytelling - something which even superhit masala films lack at times - they can drag - the characters can 'mis'behave - overflow with melodrama - and our audiences can take it fine if more or less it's on track. The problem is contrived (so called, escapist) cinema.
Am all for masala - wasn't Sholay a one? What about Farhan's Don? But if you can say it well - make it authentic - believable. Is Die Hard a realistic cinema or a powerful masala Hollywood flick? What about Usual Suspects?
Am glad to reach KJ's views. He seems too bright and they key thing going for him is his honesty, so hope he'd do better.
And yes, it's time to really learn the skills - do truly honest storytelling - i believe that Ray's Apu Trilogy would truly rock today. Of course with good marketing. Stories that touch really
