In Defense of Karan Johar
by Jeff Eletto on Oct 18, 2007 04:25 AM  | Hide replies

I find the hatred of Karan Johar from the Indian point of view so interesting. I'm from the US and I love all the opulence in his films, they don't make them like that over here anymore. There was a famous Director from the 50's and 60's named Douglas Sirk who made the kind of movies Karan makes. They starred the big stars of that era like Rock Hudson, Susan Hayward, etc and when the woman awoke from bed they were fully in make up and not a hair messed up. Most of Sirk's movies were big hits because people wanted to escape from their problems. Now in the present time when I want to escape from my problems I watch scenes from a Karan Johar movie and look at all the beautiful people, costumes and sets.

Whenever I defend the Commercial cinema on any of these websites I'm told more or less that I don't know what I'm talking about but I'm doing it from the eyes of someone that's not used to these films, so they are special to me. There is room for all types of films and I like all types of film. I just don't understand the constant Karan bashing, why do his films bother people so much? If you don't like them , then don't watch them.

That is where the difference lies. Indians have many other directors who have made such films so we are fed up of them. We want to get away from this opulence-centric, emotional melodramas and see some hard-hitting or different movies.

KARAN JOKER

Please rename this article as KARAN JOHAR, the mind of a retard. This is the apt title.

He's one of those guys who really can't think out of the box and is simply a masala movie director. Lets try to be a little honest here and give a proper reason as to why we like his films...You cannot make approve a movie is good or the director is, just because it has all the big names in it.

Well I am not sure who is running with this article, But I have to agree with what Karan Johar mentioned about himself at Tehelka to a large extent and I also disagree with the owner of this article to say that no person on earth is perfect and is always influenced by this surrondings which is what happened in KJ case. Having said that I strongly feel that a film maker should be someone like MF hussain for example walking along the streets, getting a glimpse of the real world, having a tea in a small coffee shop and chatting with people... and forget the stardom, more than half the people on street wouldnt know you are a director or a cinematographer or bla blah blah as long as you look simple and obliging.

Get over this so called family dramas and love stories and stupid comedies guys... Its not all that interesting anymore.

make movies which can drive people, drive the society and bring some change at large. Touch peoples mind on common sense not emotional sense, people have enough on plate to deal with already. Movies to me is an ART like Sholay for example and rightly mentioned by AB Gabbar will remain in our hearts for ever to remember rather than Jai or Veeru. Make movies that can be remembered for what they are in the years to come not just for box office and collections. You make a good movie and I see that the rest is there to happen. All the postive things around it. Bored you enough I believe...u can catch me at snagarajan24@yahoo.com/ nischalever@redfmail

Movies like Sholay and other good stuff are good only becoz some mediocre films are also made. It is all Maya. Without bad, what will be termed good?
