I am a professional keyboard player and also know music theory and little bit of composition - take it from me - even the worst of Ilayaraja's albums/tracks will have something interesting from a musical point of view! his arrangements, placement of chords, use of points/counterpoints, are immaculate and flawless! while learning music, I (like many others in my walk of life) looked upto this man's scores as a benchmark for learning! my guitar teacher was simply blown when my southie friends used to play some of his tracks - i vaguely recall one piece from a Kamal Hassan starrer which has an astounding bass line plus chord progression in the second interlude!
guys, music sans language - go get yourself Cheeni kum only for the interludes and the orchestral wonder
I am really curious to know if this lady has done any other music reviews before Cheeni Kum?
Akal Kam?
Looking at the way Rediff's Recruiter's penchant for picking the worst people as reviewers (who more or less worship any trash as long as it is dished out from big banners like the Chopras and Ghais), I am tempted to write to my old friend Sudeep, whose idea of great music is 'Tantana Tan Tantan Taara Chalti Hai Kya Nau Se Barah' and all songs from movies like 'Garv' and 'Neal and Niki'. I am sure he will be offered the job right away.
RE:Sonia, I'm curious, what's your idea of good music? Neal n Niki from Yash Chopra?

Take a look at this review. http://musiqa.sulekha.com/blog/post/2007/05/cheeni-kum-music.htm

LOL! Hope your friend forgives you for this :)
Seriously, how much do people like Sonia get paid (or are they on the payroll of certain production houses)?
She has absolutely no sense of music and she is qualified as a music critic? Wow!
I personally liked the music of Cheeni Kam very much. It's so refreshing I have been listening to it umpteen times since yesterday. My pick of the album is 'Jane Do Na'. It can definitely go into Shreya's top 10 song list.
My father tells me about the review of the film Sholay when it got released. Some reviewer said it is a poor effort in combining Seven Samuarai and some Western films. It would be interesting to know what the reviewer must be thinking about his abilities when the movie became a cult classic.
Sonia, I think you must share how you feel about your music reviewing(and appreciation) capabilities now.I am sure it must be similar to that of the Sholay reviewer!!
Sonia writes: "The former is soothing to the ear and has an 'operatic' feel while the latter has got jazz influences with an interesting play of instruments, predominantly the trumpet."
OPERATIC..?????????Im sure you meant symphonic! right?
TRUMPET???????????? Oh You mean Saxophone madam?
This is for the guys who hire people to write in Rediff : GO GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT, MORONS!
REDIFF IS JUST NOT QUALIFIED TO WRITE ABOUT A GENIUS OF ILAYARAJA'S CALIBRE, PERIOD!
REDIFF is better off writing about star weddings and star families visiting temples
I have decided to shun/ignore Rediff for good!
Sonia - do you know ANYTHING AT ALL about POINTS and COUNTERPOINTS in Western classical music ?? the theme music is deliciously rich in amazing counterpoints, that it is a lesson for any student of music - the seamless use of strings in all the compositions is something only a creative genius like Ilayaraja can cojure up - I am a Mumbaiite, have learnt classical music and worked small time (western classical)orchestras/bands in the West - to know, understand, appreciate this man's music, one needs some basic sense of aesthetics, if not musical sense
REDIFF lacks both aesthetics and common sense - in other words REDIFF is trash!
guys n gals, forget REDIFF - PC Sreeram (who is an eclectic artiste himself), the cinematographer for Cheeni Kum has gone on record that Ilayaraja's background score for the movie is mind-blowing with orchestral grandeur - someone like PC does not go overboard with such comments
so, ignore REDIFF - which sucks bigtime - and buy the album, or at least listen to it with an open mind and decide for yourself!

Most of the people in this forum are right in shunning rediff. Even I am thinking this for last 3 years but somehow I return to check the reviews get frustrated seeing another crap review and it keeps on happening. I think we need a quality online newspaper. Rediff is not having any quality competitors. All the others either have a print or TV version. Rediff is exploiting this fact and dishing out trash after trash.
Who said it was his best ? Or who asked whether it is his best ? or how many movies of IR do you know to judge which is the best and which is the worst ?
Last time it was "Mayakkannadi : Not Ilaiyaraja's best"
I think these guys have the head line ready "-------- : Not Ilaiyaraja's best " . Then they fill up the movie name as soon as it is released.
Guys, I am sure this Sonia cant even pronounce the name of the great composer properaly forget about understanding his music and reviewing it. no point in talking about Sonia...

I dont know why people have to be defensive and apologetic about Ilayaraja. FYI - I can definitely pronounce Ilayaraja, Gangai Amaran and the whole lot. The thing is that Ilayaraja had his great 50-60 movies ( almost Beatlesque in greatness) but the rest of them are just above Average. People should know when to bow and retire gracefully.

ARTISTS!!! should retire??? come on you must be jokin dude :D Show me one artist in this whole world who retired before. ART will be their in their blood and they keep creating till they go to their deathbed. May be the times move ahead and they can't keep with the current trend but nevertheless they can still keep churning out to satisfy their artistic hunger. And Raaja is one man who has kept well ahead and at par with time/trend and there is no need for him to retire.

There you go, you illogical idiot, there is no retirement from music listening appreciation, but for composing, i am sure Ilayaraja has to put down his baton. He had his idhazhil kadhai ezhudum etc but nothing now. Sorry my friend.

it would possibly interest u that all the songs in this movie are recycled from his own classics from mouna ragam and anu pallavi (kannada) which are indeed among his best work !going by your own comments defi. these come under the 50-60 great movies ! they are not new compositions - i jus cant accept this review - music is defi not bad !!! its subtle ... but melodious and wondrous
