Nice review but 2.5 is bad
by manoj kumar on Mar 19, 2007 03:00 AM

Hey Raja,

am a great fan of your reviews, but i have noticed you give/take a half-star a little impulsively towards the end.

agree with you on all fronts, but this movie still deserves 3 stars rather than 2.5..

My Review of 300
by gaurav tiwari on Mar 18, 2007 07:48 PM  | Hide replies

Before I write something about the movie let me give you all a back ground of the "Battle of Thermopylae", which has inspired the graphic novel of Frank Miller, which is the inspiration for this movie. "Battle of Thermopylae" was faught between 300 fine spartan soldiers against persian army of one million slaves. These 300 spartans held the persion army at pass of Thermopylae for 3 days, which gave Greek army enough time for preparation to ensure Greek victory in "Battle of Salamis". Now lets talk about the movie. The movie starts with the birth of Leonidas (Spartan King). Like any other spartan he is also trained to fight and not to surrender and retreat at any cost. When persian king Xerses sends his messenger to Leonidas asking him to surrender to Xerses, it is that training which calls for the battle with Persia. When he is not allowed to go to war against Persia by oracle (thanx to the politics), he decides to take 300 of his finest soldiers and hold the Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae. Everything in the movie has been made to look grand with special effects and well crafted background animations. Background music suits to the mood. Battle scenes are well shot. If you want to look for a great storyline, then change your mind set and watch this movie for the great battle scenes and imagery. This movie has given a new definition to war, it sometimes reminds of the war scenes of LOTR series. If you liked war scenes of LOTR, you will like this too. I would rate this movie as 7 out of 10.

Umm..Sorry to disappoint you Mr. Gaurav. The battle of thermopylae. The battle was not fought between *300* spartans and *one million slaves*. The persians never subscribed to the concept of slaves. Infact, they had totally abolished the slavery system. If anyone had slaves it was the greeks (especially spartans, a fact not shown in film...maybe then all those freedom speeches would not have made an impact). And according to herodetus' estimate the persians numbered about 120,000 and not a *million*. Moreover, the spartans fought along with 700 thebans and a few thousand (less than 5000 in any case) *slaves* . The movie is a complete distortion of history and what's more they are not ashamed of it!!.

Lateral thinking Pradeep, proud of you! I too have been reading different souces and they all contradict in terms of size of Persian Army. You seem to be a History stalwart. But yes one thing is for sure, Spartans rocks.

They needn't be ashamed coz they never claimed they are portraying history. 3OO ADs from day one called it an adaptation of frank Miller's work

Sorry i disagree with ou. They *should* be ashamed of it. Let's say i wrote a *graphic novel* of Indo-Pak war of 1971 and portray Pakis as demons and eight legged monsters, barbarians etc. And i make a movie out of it. Will you still say it's correct to do so? Movie based on comic need not be historically inaccurate. If you use real names, real people and real history then it's your DUTY to be historically as accurate as possible. Sorry the filmmakers of 300 were so blatantly ignorant (?) of this simple fact.

Im an avid Raja sen fan,and to all those who've written those snide remarks about him clearly havent read his earlier reviews. You are confusing him with another reviewer from a popular bollywood website, who gives KANK and Krish a 4/5. Raja's reviews are quite objective and impartial and let me just remind you that we all have different tastes and choices, lets learn to appreciate and respect it. So what if Raja didnt like 300 and gave it a 2.5/5(Im sure he has his reasons)and for all those who loved the film you can definitely have your say,but that doesnt mean you have to be abusive. Ive been watching these comments for a while and it hurts to see how intolerant some people could be to other's views and opinions.Well, for those who thinks,Im Raja Sen myself :) well,Im not,Im just a connoisseur of good cinema and to quote one of my favourite directors - "A good cinema is like any other works of art, like painting, dance, theatre, literature etc. No work of art directly or indirectly change society or human beings. However cinema has the power to influence the human mind. Talking about good cinema... I believe that any act of a human being committed with sincerity and conviction is good. So is the case with cinema, if it is born out of one's conviction, it cannot but be good"

Anup

its isnt about Raja writing reviews... its about how critic should approach... a topic...

first this movie doesnt depict history i mean its is honestly told as inspired by frank Miller 300. now we know that isnt a true to fact comic

secondly about dialouges and script ... its a genre of graphic novels they are treated differently from other comic adaptations... look at sincity it was also edgy and this too has the same edginess.

what was the challenege like again in sin city ..... that would the director would be able to do a comic books adaptation well or not.....

we all know how otherwise a comic book or novels adaptations are disaster... so for being a critic of 300 the movie... u ought to be well versed or critic of 300 the comic. now if u have issues with comic then dont carry that baggage when u write the review for a movie which is inspired by it....

its isnt about good or bad cinema .. just by script... its lot of elements to it ...... i have never seen a movie treated so beautifully..... a releam of animation n reality mixing so beautifully that some times am not sure whats what it seems so surreal ... its almost like a Pink Floyd or The Doors rock show where u just dont expect music but also the theaterics lights action along with it.....

but then... as u say he is sincere with his review.... and talk about conviction and sincerity ...... am sure ... 100% sure all the people writing feedback are also sincere when they are against him.... and are with the Spartans......

You hit the nail on the head Antz.. Anup is just some stupid guy who's been talking good about Raja Sen since the movie released. Hope its not Raja Sen himself with a fake name. Amyways, the movie is awesome. Love the action, love the drama, love the graphics. The director and producers have worked hard to get the best they can achieve out of a stringent budget. For the facts, this movie was made on a budget 10 times lesser than the budget of LOTR-part one.
So you can imagine what an awesome piece of work they have done with it. Thats one of the main reasons why you dont see any big stars in this movie, Cos the producers couldnt afford any. And they have already earned half the money they spent on the first day US release itelf. $70MILLION. So now you know that the movie is doing absolutley well and its a Box Office Runaway Hit. About the graphics and fantasies, guess thats why someone like Anup must have watched Harry Potters and LOTR's.

hollywoodisation of history
by sayan mukherjee on Mar 18, 2007 03:04 PM  | Hide replies

hollywood has kept on doing this over the years. by now the world knows that the second world war was between germany and america and others chipped in a bit. they know that the battle for independence in america was bigger than anything else in the country. they know that indians eat baboon heads and snatch the hearts from the bodies of small children and kali is a demon. they know that the ancient great civilization of the mayans was also a barbarian civilization which was destroyed not by spanish but by themselves.

now the world will know that the persian empire which till today as per reliable history documents was one of the stunningly progressive empires which was loaded with wealth, believed in equality of humans, etc was actually a barbarian nation.

in second world war goebbles did it to germany. it is amazing to see how hollywood is doing it to the whole world.

long live western greatness and the american hotdog....

Saw this movie, and I loved it. Presentation is 5/5. There is a lot of blood in this movie, so those who don't like blood, AVOID watching this movie... Heads chopping off is a very common thing in this movie... People who have played Max Payne or Project IGI, will find the game coming to reality!
