Yet another director who takes pride in denigrating India/ Hindus
by Manoj M on Jan 24, 2007 12:13 PM  | Hide replies

We have a breed of directors who successffully showcase exaggerate the worst in the India & Indians, & especially Hinduism. Best part is they feel proud of their 'achievement' that they had the 'courage' in showing these things. I would admire their courage if they dare to create a similar 'anti-Islamic' movie. Not only would it not be screened anywhere, it would also be banned accross most countries. The director would be very lucky to stay alive as found out the hard way by Dutch film maker Theo van Gogh or spend the rest of his life as a fugitive evading certain death.
Be happy, let more 'Water' flow.

You are right. But, the fact that other religions show intolerance does not mean Hindus should follow the same path.

There are child marriages and similar treatment still going on in India. Though the situation has far changed to a situation where widows attend marriages, still she is looked down as if, can't she avoid it by herself. There are still people who think it is inauspicious.

Hinduism is a religion of tolerance, even other religions call for tolerance, the difference is we have grown enough to understand and practice it and others just deny to grow and blindly follow uneducated clerics.

Similar efforts have been done by christians Like we saw last year in ''Da Vinci code',But you saw the impact. All across Europe and America christians criticized that. But Our pseudo secular people will say that they protested because they are more mature!!But if hindu sentiments are hurt it is ok??Rightly said by Manoj...Deepa Mehata if you have got gutts please try some movie on flaws in Muslim or Christian societies or Immigrants in Canada...That would help indians better than making imaginative stories about 1940's indian widows. There are flaws in every religion but it was never to the extant of prostitution in Banaras.Stop selling your motherland just to get recognisation Ms.Mehata

I have not seen the movie yet. But prostitution was there in Banaras as well. Mind you not long ago polygamy was also very prevelant amongst hindus it was only after Hindu marriage act that a hindu cannot openly have more than one wife. Further protitutions has been and is there accross the World and the most belonging to the segment who cannot defend or help themselves as the widows, orphans etc.

You think so!There is more widespread adultry and Sodomy in Christian monastries and Churchs across the globe!!It is natural...But getting cheap benefit out of showing this to west is not good for Mehata!!She is good filmmaker...she can get into oscars without touching controversial issues??do you think she would have got similar nomination showing her skills while making film on other issues?

Another thing to point out, is a movie in malayalam, about marriages of teenage girls in rural muslim community, called 'Padam onnu- oru vilapam'.The movie was directed by a hindu, but there were no huge reaction or protest against this movie, in fact the muslim community came one step forword to acknowledge the fact that such things happen.Just shows that it's all an issue of maturity, which unfortunately many others especially outside this state lack.

To Mr Thakur,
Da Vinci code was niether criticised or banned in west, on the contrary it was immensely succesful. The only problem it encountered was ofownership rights against the author. It was in India, especially in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradhesh were it was banned, for some ridiculous reasons.Just shows how dumb we are.Maturity is in accepting what is wrong and not in hiding it,

Have u seen the movie? I have an I did not see any 'anti Hindu' in it. Thw condition of widows in the earlier part of last century was like that and the film shows it as is, whats wrong in that?
Please try to read a story as a story, and watch a movie as a movie...

Actually you have it wrong...The fact that the global Hindu diaspora have not protested or shown contempt for the movie "Water" the way the global Islamic diaspora shows their acceptance( lack of) of religious or social criticism , is a great sign of civility and intellectual maturity !
Acceptance of criticism ,no matter what its form, is a sign of a healthy society...
In Kerala, where i come from ,we make movies that are social commentaries of all aspects of malayali society ,be it Muslim,Christian,Hindu or even Jewish! And with the commentaries comes a good dose of criticism ,which we accept with a pinch of salt.
Just my two cents....

HI Riaz,

Can you prove what you said. Do U think the society in Kerala is healthy. The truth is the society is non- reactive, they just do not care about anything good or bad.

They are so lazy to react except the communists/ leftists who do lots of drama for un important things. Those are politically oriented where we often see them standing for something they protested while they where in the opposition. Kerala society just do not mind the same even.

Kerala Society are only interested in reading hot cheap news in news papers and watch the drama played by the communists.

kiddo,
there is more reactivity and socio-political awareness in kerala than the rest of the country put togather. Just bother reading news about kerala and you will have a clue.No where else do ministers and king makers have to sit at home for doing thigs silly enough that rest of the country wouldnt have bothered about.

Hi Arul,

Hope even you read news about what happens in Kerala. Hope you have read all the nonsense about Kozhikode sex racket case and all the hype created by the communists, but recently there is no news about it, hopefully they will open it when they will be in opposition next time.

Then the recent verdict by the supreme count on Kannur BJP activist school master's case - he was murdered brutally in front of his students.

How the prosecution (of the communist govt) played around with it, the acquittal of most of the accused and the big rally conducted by the leftists to welcome them out of jail.

Do you still want to agree on the awareness and social responsibility factor of us Keralites?

:) Believe me when i say this , when it comes to nit picking Keralite society i am at the forefront.i cant even begin to start on all the wrongs with Malayali society (alcoholism, wife-abuse,and communism apparently?? ), but i was only mentioning a small part of it vis-a-vis the social comentaries of films and our reaction to them. thats all...we are far from being a healthy society, but i hope atleast that we arent comatose yet, ;)
Every society since time immemorial has had its flaws, to believe otherwise is asinine. And exposing those flaws will help us correct whatever wrongs plague society .i know its idealist in principle, atleast lets try...
ps
By the way , i did enjoy your comments ;),maybe i'm non-reactive too!

Please Prudhviji,Try to understand the sucess mantra in West.If Deepa mehata is so much worried about Widows of Banaras then she should raise fund and work in the field. It is not boldness and Courage as you said, she is just another opportunist who is gaining selling her homeland. And you will watch that it will be given oscar!!This is American strategy, they engourage movies which make them justify in hitting other countries/societies.I will give you one sure success mantra...If some Iranian today makes movie based on exploits within Iran,That movie will sure get Oscars!!!

Movies are society's way of communicating and that includes its ills. Just because an ill is pointed out doesnt mean its any lesser or any bigger. People like you Mr Vinay living in the stone age of india cant see beyond the tip of your nose, but you cant be blamed cause most India is like that which why we are so backward and take pride in it. "Selling homeland"? Please use your head and not feet to think....
