Martin Scorcese - The departed
by on Mar 01, 2007 02:06 PM

I think it was wrong to give an Oscar to a film which is a remake. What happened to the originality? Hollywood is doing what Bollywood has been doing for the past 100 years

I would choose other winners
by on Feb 27, 2007 04:59 AM

I think "Letters from Iwo Jima" deserved the Best Picture oscar. I am glad Scorcese got it finally for directing, though.
Whitaker for best actor was good, I think. My second choice would be Peter o' Toole, and then diCaprio at the third.
However, I disagree with the Best Foreign Film choice. "Water" or "Pan's Labyrinth" deserved it. But Americans cannot get rid of their European heritage, and cannot stop being revulsed by the idea of communism. Given the fact that "The lives of others" depicted evils in communist East Germany before the end of the Cold War and that it was awarded Best Picture in European Film Awards, its win was not a surprise, though disappointing. When will Oscar voters stop being biased?

Bollywood is junk
by Sundeep Nayak on Feb 27, 2007 12:12 AM  | Hide replies

running around trees and hero worshiping the actor and actresses.
Bollywood just exploits the Indian people's over emotion, there is just no theme or plot. Technical brilliance is however getting there.

Not really. There are many good movies coming out these days. Just like bollywood is obsessed with "running around trees", hollywood is obsessed with

1) "Aliens attacking planet earth" and bunch of guys saving us from disaster

2) "A group of teenagers usually with a male/female ration of 1:1 who embark on a pleasure trip, but get lost and end up haunted by a serial killer or hideous ruthless creatures (can be as big as dinosaurs or as small as earthworms)

3) Family moves into new house but is haunted by ghosts

4) Pretentious crap like 'Mr and Mrs Smith'

5) The Underdog story where a coach walks into the thick of an unruly football, basketball, baseball team and helps them win a major tournament

6) Comedy movies like the one in which Tim Allen runs around like a dog...action movies where a single guy destroys an entire army etc

So point is...there are exceptions - in hollywood and bollywood and everywhere. You just have to find them. Instead of doing that you come here and generalize the entire bollywood as junk.

I think you missed the entire point. Nobody is bashing Oscar here. I'm arguing against the statement that "bollywood movies are junk" and is all about 'running around trees' and stuff' with no theme or plot. You just cannot generalize an entire industry like that. There are exceptions - many. Maybe not in mainstream. But is hollywood any better when it comes to mainstream? Recent highest grossing movie is "Night at the Museum" which grossed more than The Departed, Prestige, Children of Men etc. Have you seen it buddy ?

And for the record, typical as I am I've seen all the movies you listed and own atleast half of them. Here is my favourites list - http://movies.yahoo.com/mvc/dls?iid=255-6877807&lid=7-37680

But I repeat I wouldn't be naive enough to call Bollywood as 'Junk' despite my interests being elsewhere

I tuned in E channel .....
by rahul singh on Feb 26, 2007 09:58 PM

Yesterday I watched E channel and saw the whole 2 hours Oscars red carpet. It was extremely glamorous. Then I tuned in Sony for Filmfare I was quite disappointed. They had told that it will be formal. it was formal, but it wasn%u2019t glamorous. I decided to watch Oscars. The host was funny and the overall presentation was excellent. I love the way they had presented the costume nominee and best song nominee. Beyonce, Reese, Penelope looked extremely gorgeous. it was the best Oscars ever.

Happy with the Oscar winners? Do you think they deserved the Oscar?
frankly, who cares? pls wake up!!! The awards are ALREADY distributed!!!
The academy won't reconsider their decisions based on a few (hundreds or thousands or even millions of) opinions on Rediff's msg board! Move along1

Well for one I CARE!
We are not discussing in rediff with the notion that these discussions will influence the decision of the academy.

Why don't you extend your philosophy -
"We discuss movies after they are released. Why ? The movie will not be re-shot even if majority thinks some scenes could have been done better and even pointed them out"

"We discuss wars fought way back and argue if it was right or wrong. Why? War is already over. Whats the point in debating if it was right or wrong?"

"We discuss about Pakistan testing long range nuclear missile. They already tested it right? Will they dismantle it if we voice our opinion in rediff"

So by the same token, many discussions are pointless since they are about things that already happened.

Last I want to ask you something. Why do you bother to come here and post this message. You think rediff users are going to stop discussions coz you made them aware that Academy awards are already distributed and decisions won't be reconsidered. Well rediff users are already discussing and looks like they might continue to discuss atleast for the time being. pls wake up!

Oh and btb your nick is aptly chosen. You are indeed 'confused'. If previous post was not clear enough, let me try to put it in simple words...Whether someone cares or not is NOT the question. People discuss it to express their views and get to know others views on the same. And yeah I am ignoring your address to me. Feel like a hero using such words taking advantage of anonymity on the net. I don't feel angry, neither sad. Just pity for you confused...

Oscars-mother of all award shows
by natasha moit on Feb 26, 2007 08:58 PM

Why r we fighting here on oscars and filmfare, on who is better or what?? Frankly Indian movies and only made for indian audience, and english movies for an international audience. Indian movies are good but only for India not outside, it doesn't even make sense if you c it with good english movies, I really appreciate that hindi movies are evolving from over-acting, rona-dhona type, and no story lines, 7-8 songs.... If an Indian movie deserved to win oscar than it would be a movie that would reach out to in the international platform. Why do the movies from germany, bosnia, italy etc keep winning, think about it, watch a oscarwinner and watch it with an indian movie.. Water was a far better movie than past years, but not to the mark of those ones. Think why was panther pachalli an oscarwinner? We will win one day for sure, but when we get there only!
