controversies toh har field main hoti hai chaahe woh National Award, chaahe koi aur award, but we should not feel biased against this decision b'cos award dene se pehle you have too choose better, and jury ne shayam benegal saab ko yeh award dene se pehle saari chizon ko hi dyan main rakha hoga. toh please relionalism main hamein nahin phansna chaahiye.

Who cares about the region from which he has come.He is a damn good filmmaker and that is what really counts.
We Hyderabadis are proud that one of our own, Shyam Benegal ji has been conferred the Dada Saheb Phalke award. It is a great honour for a man whose family traces it humble origins to Alwal, a suburb of Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad. All his earlier movies were based on the fuedal problems of Telengana. We are proud of you Shyam ji

Yes. Basically he is a konkani speaking person and his ancestors are from Benegal a place near Udupi I think ( may be Karwar). He is more a Canarese than a Telugu. However he is supposed to be born in Andhra. So even Kannadigas can be proud of his roots. Now he is rooted in Bengal. So he is a true Indian and all are proud abt him

Shyam Benegal (born 14 December, 1934 in Alwal, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh) is a prolific Indian director. Benegal is related to the famous film director and actor Guru Dutt Padukone - contrary to what is generally believed. His paternal grand-mother and Guru Dutt's maternal grand-mother were sisters. Both are nominally Konkani speaking Chitrapur Saraswats. He is also the founder of the Hyderabad Film Society and a former Ad Filmmaker.
