It's music is not even close to Classic Umrao Jaan.
Why compare with classic it is nowwhere near todays chartbuster as well
Himesh, S-E-L, A.R. Rehman has compltetly dominated the music chart. Malik is just an average composer, since even Pritam and others are giving better hits than him
I don't Know what the hell J.P.Dutta is going to prove by making A classic which will not be able to relate to todays generation.
Farhan Akhar's Don is a much better proposition since it is made considering contempary Flavour
Between 1981 and 2006 (25 years), the tastes among film-goers have changed drastically. Umrao Jaan is a sensible and classic novel, it runs smoothly in the Nawabi style and among today-s films, it may be extraordinary or misfit. The elder generation people will be able to enjoy and appreciate the Nawabi style shayaries. depth in the dialogues was what was needed to be appreciated. However, the present cinema, which rovers around love, romance and changing colours as well as robes six times a second (thanks to the technology), add group dances, jazz music and fast beats, Umrao Jaan music will be found as slow, tardy and boring. However, try to listen the music taking yourself to Nawabi era (Have you read Time Machine of Wells? you will know how it would be), you will definitely appreciate everything. The music has to be listened as a classic piece and the movie is to be watched as a classic story. You will love it.
why does rediff give ill-fitting titles? the title says "not as good" but the review itself is not that bad.infact it's got 3 stars. and if i may suggest something, plz never compare a remake desperately with the original. the remake ,however good it might be, never looks as good as the original since the latter has achieved a cult/classic/benchmark status. it's better if u just analyze something with respect to present day offerings. and anu mallik and j p dutta should be congratulated for trying things differently from the original unlike in the case of "don" which has remixed the original songs tastelessly!
Bollywood never ceases to amaze me...somebody made a remake and now everybody is making one ! Don, Umrao Jaan, Sholay...which one is next? Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Lagaan (a bit too early?), Mother India...? I am looking forward to Don and Sholay...
'agle janam data bitiya'....sung by anmol malik is one of the best, most touching voice/music/and lyrics i have heard in a long long time...its awesome!!!...thanx anmol malik and javed akhtar for the superb song!... fab work!!!!
I dont know what exactly music reviewer expects in life? this is one of the nice collection i came across of late. Javed akthar's lyrics are mindblowing. Please stop critisizing the music and give a review for it :)
i agree even 3 stars are too much its a dud , the alka voice is flat no dard and javeds lyrics mediocre yeh kya jage he dosto and justju in old umrao are 2 of the best gazals ever done
