Remembering Hrishida
by VC Jampala on Aug 29, 2006 08:33 AM

I have many fond memories of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's films of the 70s, many of which I have seen several times. He seemed to make films about people I could have known, people that were believable and immensely likeable for their virtues, and more importantly, for their foibles. Even now, I laugh remembering some scenes from his films and get a lump in my throat at the memory of others. I was sorry when he stopped making films, and sorrier to note his passing away. Iski jeevan sirf lambi nahin thee, badi bhi - just like his Anand said life should be. He will live as one of the important icons of Indian cinema.

We can never compare two legends of our Indian cinema, both had different style of direction. one was semi commerical and the other was Art director. But one common thing both has in their movies it has social message.

Remembering Hrishida

To all those who love to sit back at home on Sunday afternoons, Hrishida's movies were more than a treat. He presented his ideas in a simple and most acceptable manner. The characters from his movies like Bawarchi and Satyakam always appreciated and motivated those who found themselves lonely in a world of lies and deception. His movies will always keep inspiring. May his spirit stays in peace.

by Anand Shah on Aug 29, 2006 02:17 AM

Dear Readears,,

only one thing we could say is that he was a normal man making normal peoples film with simplicty to convey the message of culture, ethics for which our country is known for, indepth knowledge of middle class mentality their problem their desire but he was always stuck with family movies, never taken a route of vulgarity with the sake of art,

biggest compliment is he was our own man

long live sir,,,you and your work always remains with us.

The greats leave us so stranded.

We Indians of all walks of life, will miss the light intellecutality of life so vividly and artfully presented by Hrishida. India and bollywood have been left poorer indeed by the demise of this shinning star of yesteryears which has at last fallen. Long live Hrishida and may god bless your soul.

Truly an End of An Era
by Vishnu on Aug 28, 2006 11:00 PM

I'm very saddened to hear about the death of one of my favorite filmmakers. I must say, out of most of the Hindi filmmakers, I enjoyed Hrishida's films the most. Even in the commercial film mode, the films managed to stay realistic and natural. The melodrama and the emotion that came out of those films was not at all over the top or illogical. I wish he would have continued making films but I think the times have changed drastically and most people are not interested in that kind of cinema any more. We must remember that he came from an era where good quality films were being made and the commercial aspects of the film were not the most important, but the story and the acting was. Even people like my grandfather who was a strict orthodox brahmin, enjoyed watching a film like Bawarchi. Even in his later years, Hrishida was making films that were more like the films of old rather than the contemporary hits of that time like Sholay and Deewaar and what not. He did leave us a great body of work. My favorite films of his are Anari, Anuradha, Anupama, Anand, Bawarchi, Abhimaan, Namak Haraam, Chupke Chupke, Rang Birangi, and Khoobsurat. Hrishida, you're THE man, and I salute you.

Tribute to Hrishikesh Mukherjee
by Sumana Chatterjee on Aug 28, 2006 09:14 PM

By the death of the ledendary Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Indian cinema has lost an institution.

By watching his films it also made me think, as if i am watching the sorrows and joys of an ordinary Indian middle class family from the window of my house.
