National Awards have been biased always. Especially in the last decade when the "NRI" market for Bollywood picked up, with the opulent family dramas of the mid-1990s. These films made the "Yash"s the kings of "Indian Cinema" (read 'Bollywood'; Is Indian Cinema is Bollywood only ? this is a big sham).
Many deserving candidates have not been awarded, due to petty reasons or prejudices. The late Sivaji Ganesan, the most talented actor I have seen, was not awarded for many of his excellent performances - I am excluding his histrionic portrayals while saying so - films like "Mudhal Mariyadhai" deserved better recognition than what was given. Each of Sivaji's performances was better than 'Agneepath'. Kamal Haasan got award only thrice; many of his deserving movies missed the awards. Even his most mediocre performance was better than 'Hum Tum'. Sridevi got NO award for "Moonram Pirai". Mammootty and Mohanlal also did not get awards for many of their films. Bollywood has two types of actors-1.award actors-Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi or 2.commercial-AB, SRK, Madhuri, etc. South has hybrid. Ilaiyaraaja, Balachander, Thilakan, PC Sriram & many others were not recognized enough.

hai,, for me geethu mohandas and meera jasmine are best of this centuary actress.geethu was to get national award for oridam and akale.but they didny give.bollywood actresses are all bad....glamour..rani only gud.mohanlal,,,best,,,,,,,ab also.....why they didnt give both??????????
AB for national award.. thats a cheap one.. he was pathectic in the movie.. he was only shouting.. naseruddin shah w'd hav given the movie a better outlook for genuine movie lovers, not for bollywood babies..
and abt the best actor i heard many diplomatic south indians here sayin that both AB and Lal shd share the award.. utter nonsense.. A few raising of sounds dont add up to a gr8 performance.. and the reason y lal outscores everyone is that he is very subtle wit his emotions.. u w'd never marvel abt lal's acting after u seee his movie, u w'd be on tearms wit his charecter.. he just ethes the charecter onto the viewers minds.. truly awesome...
note:naseruddinshahs a gr8 actor.but not worthy for this years supporting lead award.for me its manojkjayan in anathabhadram and the best cinematography absolutely not ravi k chandran, its santosh shivan for anathabhadram... i haventseen sarika'sperformance.. wish to see that.. after seein shobhanas, urvashis, and of late meera jasmine and geethu mohandas(for me the best actress in india rite now) rani mukerjee's is crap..god save indian cinema frm these bollywood hypocrytes.at te current rate SRK w'd win bharath next year!
Dont know whether Mohan Lal was also a contender for the Best Actor awards but his performance in Thanmatra deserved recognition too. The awards should have gone to both these gifted actors.
For those who havent watched Thanmatra , well its worth a watch
Its truly demeaning if the jury chose Bachan over MohanLal. I am not being a hypocrite but... Bachan was good.. but whn two actors enact similar roles of Alzhiemer patients the comparison is simple.. you just cant compare was bachan does [just shakes around a lot] to what Mohanlal has done in Thanmatra...
If best acting performance is abt dramitical exhibitions letting ppl know ur sweating and struggling at the studio, u'll find more bollywood actors getting best national awards, even the phoney rajnikant, vijay, chiranjeevi names too. itz all about behaviour of the character n showing just and applying sense ateast commonsense... mohanlal's talent is incomparable.. and he is far reach of other names in this business. hence i dont find any names eligible for contender's list. if black is the film in all news . put on ur senses dear ppl.. itz helen keller of indian origin born and brought up in a wealthy and prestigious family.. a billion dollar worth house n settings..family names of the wealthiest.. and a their handicapped daughter n her win over her incapabilities. the director n script writer shud ve the guts to depict a daughter of a mediocre family..itz same old story tht money can win anything.therez where iqbal scores.itz an inspirational film than black.well to me sanjay leela bhansali only knows stories of the wealthiest families who live at largest of mansions..dear readers watch iqbal and black find urself the difference.. n the supporting actor award is real idiotic
i had seen both Amithabh,s Black and Mohanlals Thanmatra, both the films are good, may be tough competition, but Mohanlal have a edge, i am not a malayali or not hindi speaking guy
For all those don't watch malayalam movies should watch 'THANMATHRA' for their sake to realize that they are missing one of the GREATEST PERFORMANCE given by any actor ever in Indian Cinema. You can compare Lal's performance in 'THANMATHRA' to any great acting already performed or yet to perform. You should be a fool to say NO to such a performance. As BBC commented the rest of the nation is not enough lucky to watch Mohanlal's performances. Try to understand the fact that it's not so easy to perform the role of an alzeimer's afflicted patient by keeping one balance between over acting and intense emotions. Here is a performance that any Indian actor can analyze and learn. I can't believe that a responsible Jury can do this.... I am not saying this because I am a malayalee. We have seen many national award winning performance in Malayalam and other languages before,But when we saw THANMATHRA whole kerala agreed that this performance will be discussed for years. We have know problem for giving up for any matchable one.......But any already mantioneed other performance really don't match. One thing I can assure you that you are doing a great mistake if u are neglecting this one...
i think mohanlal should have won the best actor award for thanmatra.his performace as an alzeimer's afflicted patient has to be seen to be believed.i am not saying this coz i am a malayali.bachchan too performed superbly in black but when his perfomance compares to lal,the latter is eons ahead.but of late the national awards have been honouring more of hindi films so it comes as no surprise to me.i am sure lal will again win the award within the next 2 years.
