Poetry in pictures

I have defended rediff in numerous ocassions, when everyone has cried foul over the over-persistent rebuking. However, after seeing this review and consequently the film, I have to conclude that the reviewer should be sacked! It is true that the Websters Encyclopedia and Dictionary of the Engligh Language defines a critic as a 'fault finder', but provided there is a fault.

Parineeta is purely Bengal, not only through the landscape, but also through a 1960s Stateman Paper, A 1960s Dairy Milk wrapper and the Saridon jingle. The reviwer knows nothing of Calcutta as except those seen in books and journals. Just capturing three crane shots of the city doesn't make it a setting.

Devdas was an apology to Sarat Chandra while Parineeta is a tribute.

Flaws? Yes -
1) No mention of the 1962 Indo-China War.
2) Shekhar in a polo neck, Girish in coat to brave the cold, but Shekhar's friend in a Hawaian shirt.
3) Melodramatic ending - uncalled for.

Please rediff, do something about it! Get better reviewers!

Sumit is accurate
by Siddharth on Jun 14, 2005 02:59 PM

The article puts a very accurate analysis of the movie. Because of weak copyright laws in india, anyone is free to do anything with the creation of great writers like Sharat Chandra. It is not the mistake of viewers if they find the movie interesting and heart touching, it is simply the greatness of the epic which even in it's distorted form leaves such effet. In fact this the Parineeta of sarkaar rather than of Sharat babu. Sharat babu never wrote a fictional story. His characters were always from his own real life (like shrikaant was no one else but sharat babu). I would suggest all of u who feel that sumit is not doing justice by criticising Parineeta, should spare some time to read the origional Parineeta and abt Sharat babu also. Writers like Sharat Chandra and Prem Chandra are not merely story writers, they are our national icons and the spirit of their creations must not be distorted.

Parineeta - Nothing great about the movie
by Raja on Jun 14, 2005 02:18 PM

I think I agree with Sumit on his views about the movie. The movie claims to be an era movie, set in the 1960s, but there are way too many flaws that could have been set right (e.g. Saif's Guitar, the watch he wears, ladies wearing audacious dresses for the 1960s such as backless cholis and sleeveless/short salwars etc.)

More importantly, the film lacks emotion (except for the final scene when the director attempts to make up for the whole movie) - I havent yet read the book by Sarat Chandra, but having seen the movie, I am sure that the book is a million times better. Excepting Saif, most of the other characters just seem to walk in and out without much screen presence.

I think the movie could have been better directed, and it does not do justice to the book or author.

Parineeta - any enmity between sumit and pradeep
by Mayoushree Debnath on Jun 14, 2005 02:02 AM

Can it be clarified whether there is any personal emnity between Mr Sumit and Mr Pradeep - the director of Parineeta? Sumit should watch any movie atleast twice before rolling his pen for some review, since this creates confusion among the viewers.Lucky we didn't see his review before watching Parineeta.
Thanks.

Epitome of Greatness

I trust the reviews on Rediff.com as do many people. This is a clear misguidance to all the cinema lovers so please don't do it. I don't see any reason to have a Counterview. What has happened to rediff?? The last time I was annoyed when they gave an excellent rating for Bunty-Bubbly.....such a shallow movie except for the songs.

What the heck is Sumit out there to prove. Parineeta is filming and movie-making at their best and Sumit is Pessimism at its best.

The movie is a Classic and I wouldn't mind saying that it should be included in the all time 'Classics Hall of fame'.

The story telling aspect, screenplay, art direction, editing, background score, acting, look and feel anything and everything is exceptional. The only thing that could have been better, not that its bad, is the music. Also they could have inclded a few more read two to three more scenes of romance between Shekhar and Lolita.

I was longing for more when the movie ended. So I am going to see it atleast a couple of times more to quench this thirst. I urge you all everyone to see this masterpiece.

Hats off to Vidhu Vinod Chopra, till now his Kareeb was my faourite......now it will be Parineeta as well

Parineeta:Review
by Anup Nair on Jun 13, 2005 09:14 PM

Parineeta is immensely watchable..as compared to some of da recent hindi movies. The only hiccup being da climax scene, the 'Thod de' (break da god damn wall scene)jes had me in splits. But overall its a commendable effort and worth watching

What happened to the reviewer
by Raghu on Jun 13, 2005 06:20 PM

Hi,
I think we all have this attitude of finding faults in each and everything including movies. Well, I am happy that directors are making movies to one segment of people only and not for mass community, since I think I am that one part of segment. If you see the trend of skin show seen in movies Parineeta is a good change and a relief. I agree that counterviews exist. But just imagine about the hard work that goes into making a piece of art. I think Parineeta neednot be hyped so much but at the same time it should be given due credit making a viewer understand the director or autors point of view. Appreciate the cinematography. Appreciate the acting skills of a new comer like Vidya Balan. Appreciate the music. Well to summarise even Michelangelo was critised for his frecos when he was alive. What the heck we humans are like this......

It is a wonderful entertainer
by Priya on Jun 13, 2005 06:17 PM  | Hide replies

I am shocked by the review posted by Mr. Sumit Bhattacharya. I also agree that rediff is loosing its credibility as far as movie review goes. How can a wonderful movie like Parineeta be labeled \"just a music video\". I watched the movie, a hindi movie after a long time and I have to say that I would love to watch it again. It is a wonderful entertainer. I have not read the original novel but then I doubt if the real motive behind the movie is to re-create the original novel-something that has already been done many times, or so I assume. This is an adaptation of the novel with a modified script to entertain the audience. I am just glad that the direction, screenplay all are so wonderfully done that one does not feel it to be a drag anywhere along the lines...kudos to the Parineeta team. It is a wonderful entertainer crafted for an audience from the 21st century!

Parineeta
by Anirban on Jun 13, 2005 02:04 PM

Parineeta is a brave remake, I would say since there could always be a comparison drawn. Being a period film, it becomes even more necessary to look into finer details.
Overall parineeta was a good film and I guess most of the viewers would like it.
There were some mistakes e.g. a bengali never wears a black suit on his marriage day. It has to be a dhoti kurta!! Even a bengali director has overlooked it.
I found this movie more realistically told than Devdas which was overtly dramatic and unreal at times (period).
