Parineeta is not only good, it's better than Bhansali's Devdas
by Arijit on Jun 22, 2005 11:54 AM

I agree with the comment made by the last contributor. Other than the climax the movie has all detail, all compatibility to Calcutta of the 1960s and above all has probably the best adaptation of Sharat babus literary genius in modern time. Kudos to Pradip Sarkar and Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

People like the author here will not even comprehend how important it is to depict the genuineness of the context when you try to bring such largely read works of people of the magnitude of Sharat Chandra, Rabindranath, bibhutibhusan and even modern day mahashweta/suchitra bhattacharjee/shirshendu/sunil.

Bengal is rich in culture, rich in detail and so is a viewer who appreciates these.Bhansali's Devdas was such a child's play, nothing in line with what Bengal was in the times of Devdas Mukherjee. "Devdas" had only pomp and show wherein Bharat Shah showed off his wealth and Bhansali had to make the movie loud enough to match up the grandeur.

Parineeta is far mroe real and closer to kolkata and the british colonial upscale lifestyle, about which we heard so much from our dads and uncles. Even some glimpses we saw in our schooldays.

I feel Parineeta is a really wonderful movie to wacth except the climax...but forget it. i am totally against the review made by sumit bhattacharya..its better to remove that review ...the music is wonderful..and i think vidya balan was perfect..its just her first movie... sumit is like a pakka bengali babu...i think he cud only c the bengali actors in the movie... it was such refreshing to c the movie unlike the hopeless bunty n babli...come on if u cant infer correctly atleast dont post such a baseless review..or i will advice you watch the movie again...

B'wood movies!
by Vidya Ramanathan on Jun 15, 2005 04:42 AM

I haven't seen the film, but I neverthless agree with the author. Period movies in B'wood are potrayed as though everything was heavenly back in those days! Remember Devdas, where the clothes were so rich and gaudy and their houses looked liked Sadam's palaces! Inspite of the charecter Paro being from a poor family! The whole movie looked as though the director was so interested in getting the clothes, the set, the lights right, that he forgot that what makes a movie exceptional is afterall good performances and good storytelling!
I don't when B'wood directors will wake up and start concentrating on the real issues of film making.

Too pretty pretty? Yes
by Shrabonti on Jun 14, 2005 05:09 PM

A beautiful thing can be spoiled by being made too beautiful. I totally agree with the reviewer that making something look picture perfect only reduces it to the status of still-life, a set piece -- and cinema cannot be an excuse for showcasing eye-catching still life. A period movie can be just as candy floss as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai's bubblegum perfection, and movies like Devdas And Parineeta just prove it.

Its Me
Parineeta is an immensely watchable Film
by Its Me on Jun 14, 2005 04:50 PM

I think the makers do have the liberty of slightly changing the storyline . Its an inspired film .. Its not a copy of what Sarat Chandra wrote.
Its a wonderful piece of art.
Commendable work by Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan .

The film does have bengali culture in it and please dont try and look for each and every custom to be followed.

Also for one person who wrote abt the sexual scene between Girish and Lolita .. Please watch the film properly .. those were Shekars' imaginations !!!

And Rediff do learn to appreciate a good movie rather than trying to proive a critic by trashing good films .

I think its a well executed piece of art.

Kudos !

Nice Remake!!!
by Falgun on Jun 14, 2005 03:57 PM

Hi! I must congrtulate the Director for the attempt he has made to transform a literary novel into a typical indian classic.

But there are always two sides of a coin.It depends on individual how he visualise the creation.
Three chears for PARINEETA!!!

Parineeta review - reg.
by saumitra on Jun 14, 2005 03:49 PM

It's not so bad as described by sumit bhattacharya. If you are adamant to point out defects then not a single movie upto now has been perfect.
After a long time theaters are showing a beautiful movie. Although director of Parineeta was not able to potrait the Sharat Chandra's novel completely, but I think this movie has shown better Bengali culture than Devdas of couple of years back. Vidya Balan's acting and makeup was justifying Lolita's character. Saif and Sanju were Ok and Sabyasachi was doing his job according to his stature.
