Mrigaya was undoubtedly a classic movie. I remember I was still a school going kid. I used to be taken by my cousin to some of the shootings that took place in Tollygunge club. My cousin Dr Kosaraju Rajeswara Rao who was the producer of the movie used to come from the US quite frequently. I always used to help him in Bengali when we were around. It was my third language in School. So I was quite comfortable with reading and writing and also translating it. Almost all the assistants speak only Bengali and it was a wonderful experience interacting. I saw Mithun Chakravarthy for the first time and imagined him as a real life hero though he was a debutant. I also saw Mamata Shanker who was poignant and full of grace. I was not surprised that Mrigaya bagged several awards including the 1977 National Film Award –Golden Lotus Award Best Film given to Director Mrinal Sen .The Certificate and the Plaque is seen in my home. My Brother Dr Rajeswara Rao had given us to keep it as a remembrance. It is a wonderful gesture. Some memories never fade. Mrigaya is undoubtedly one. Great Director,Great Actors and a wonderful movie that was made. It just helped me to think of making a movie on the same lines. Awards 1977 – Filmfare Award – Best Film (Mrinal Sen) 1977 – Moscow International Film Festival – Nominated for Golden Prize : Best Film (Mrinal Sen) 1977 – National Film Award, India – Golden Lotus Award – Best Film (Mrinal Sen) 1977

A wonderful mix of Indian Films, a true representation of all the great films made in all the Indian languages.Mr Bhaskaran is indeed a great man in choosing the right films. Others like subhash ghai seem so small compared to his greatness in choosing films. We would love it if rediff includes such knowledgeable people like Mr Bhaskaran in matters concerning films and exclude pompous persons.
What about Benegal's KALYUG (Hindi), B. N. Reddy's MALLESWARI (Telugu) and Mrinal Sen's Kandhar? I wish to get in touch with my old friend and colleague, Mr. Baskaran. I await his response.
This is a scholarly analysis to pick the 10 best in Indian cinema. It is not an easy task. It requires looking at film from various technical parameters including structure of the script, cinematography and the story itself.
Individuals such as Mohanlal and Subhash Ghai have just picked movies based on their whims. These guys may be moderately talented but they lack the intellectual bandwidth to analyze and critique Indian film.
I really agree with ur Mr.Bhaskaran. It is a wonderful combination of beautiful movies from all around India. I should people like Subhash Ghai and other should lend some time of theirs to watch such movies so that they understand wat good movies are and younger generation too must get an access to such movies. I dont think even DDLJ too can stand in front of movies like Prohor, Pather Panchali.
