wonderful selection
by shwetha on Jun 11, 2005 03:06 PM

I really agree with ur Mr.Bhaskaran. It is a wonderful combination of beautiful movies from all around India. I should people like Subhash Ghai and other should lend some time of theirs to watch such movies so that they understand wat good movies are and younger generation too must get an access to such movies. I dont think even DDLJ too can stand in front of movies like Prohor, Pather Panchali.

Aparna Sens 36 chowringhee lane is conspicous in its absence.

Are we talking best movies in terms of success or in terms of art? Ghais list stinks of commerce.

Even pyasa and nayakan are doubtful in any critics list. ray and ghatak between themselves will take up the first 15 maybe again only Aparna Sens 36 chowringhee lane could squeeze in.

Where Ray scores over Ghatak is his thematic variety as Ghatak seems to be repetitive in his pessimism.

comments on the lsit

There is a clear dichotomy in the way 10 best films in India are proposed. the dichotomy is this. just look at the list from the people you have surveyed. those with predominantly hindi/bollywood background are so 'illiterate and unenlightened' about films from other regions. Whereas take mohanlal and theodore bhaskaran their repertore speaks for itself. It is indeed sad Indian films are very often equated to hindi film, when actually the true/genuine riches of Indian films are found elsewhere as Bhaskaran as clearly balanced and enunnciated.

Instead of saying that the listed movies haven't captivated or captured the audience, don't you think that the blame should be on the audience who seem to enjoy movies with lots of songs, some action and a little 'oomph' thrown in... have u seen any hollywood movie with a song sequence and the hero and heroine running around trees and how many good hollywood movies have a fight scene?.. the same hollywood movies when they come to india, the indian audience calls it a wonderful movie but when a similar movie is made in india with a good story barring the songs and action they say it is not a movie for the masses... i hope my point is clear...

good movies, but why they are not box office hits
by Ravi on Jun 08, 2005 12:30 AM  | Hide replies

Hi Theodore
The movies listed are good, but why they are not box office hits. take in case of western movies good movies run full house, but its not the case in India, so its a failure by the indian film makers to captivate the viewers.

hi

this is to the person who said that the western movies are all hits.....i think we should compare them in the same way... most of the movies which got oscars best picutre and which are in the best 100 movies list have run in empty theatres....so they cannot be clamied as box office hits...

A balanced list!
by Sarath on Jun 07, 2005 11:49 PM

This is a very balanced list which can be put up only by a film historian. I am very happy with the inclusion of Ritwik Khatak and Aravindan as these two are always sidelined because of the prominence given to Satyajith Ray and Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The short but objective and learned observations make the list even more pleasurable.

it was a great selection by Mr.Bhaskaran.hatsoff sir,,ive seen some of the movies..they are indeed very good in technical values and storylines..and I couldnt believ Mr.Subash Ghai naming TAAL as on of the Best, because some of his other movies are better than TAAL and There are n number of movies in INDIA that are much Better Than TAAL..If he couldnt find any ask him to come SOUTH..We Will Show HIM...
Thanx to Rediff.com if few more people such as Mr,Bhaskaran select some more movies, then actually we,Youth can have an Idea of all The Greatest INDIAN MOVIES,and we could actually be knowing them
