It is very unfair to list only one movie after 1975. In fact I have seen only two of them(sholay and guide) out of that 9 as I am not interested in movies made with less technology. Why we Indian always prefer to follow "Old is gold". Could you forget DDLG, KKHH, PARINDA. Hey, where did you throw DEEWAR(1975) out?
Well 1st of all, there's Art and there's the popular entertainment genre. Any person who is well read and aware of "indian" cinema will know that the best art movies in india are made in malayalam and bengali. Ofcourse there's the occasional Girish Kasaravalli and other regional language movies which are very very good.
When it comes to entertainers, Hindi and Tamil wins hands down. Here too malayalam movies of the 80s score hands down(mainly for their originality). Unfortunately malayalam and bengali movies have a very limited audience compared to hindi and tamil.
Choosing only 10 best in "indian" cinema is very harsh because a lot of movies which deserve will not feature in such a small list. I think we should have had a top 10 for each of the main indian languages.
That would have been interesting.
As far as Mr Ghai's list, well the less said the better.

guess, people like Mr Ghai and MR vipul Shah don't know the fact that hindi movies constitute only 20% of the Indian Film Industry ...Its a shame that such bigwigs of Bollywood fail to notice master pieces of other languages ....
Some of the facts that everyone is supposed to know..
1. Before Independence, Bengali Movies were the Forerunners as far as India's representation is concerned...
2. Telugu film industry grossed more revenue than much-hyped Bollywood in the year 2002.They also produced more movies that Bollywood
3. The film watching population in Chennai alone is more than that of the entire North-East states put together.
4. The number of Theatres in TN and AP put together are much more that the entire Norht-east-west India barring MUMBAI .
5. Some of the classical Malayalam/kannada movies of 70s and 80s are still unparelled today, mainly bcos of the lack of popularity of those films due to limited market.
6. Bollywood as such is made up of people from all regions (chopras of Punjab, Bhansalis of Gujarat, stars from MH, WB etc)
so pl come out of narrow mindesness and give all languages equal representation
1. The Apu Trilogy (Simply the best) 2. Pushpak (This is comedy at its peak) 3. Charulata (An overall masterpiece, not forget the swing shot) 4. Mother India (We all know) 5. Meghe Dhaka Tara (Ghatak at his best) 6. Interview (Mrinal Sen's take on laughable humour) 7. Ankur (A breakthrough in Hindi cinema) 8. Bose (A true magnum opus) 9. Mukhamukham (Adoor Sir's take on the backwaters) 10.Nayakan (Polished and refined)
well wat can one say abt mr. ghai's selection..seems he stays in a world of oblivion..he has created a travesty of sorts by not including films by styajit ray and atoor gopalakrishnan and including films like taal and kuch kuch hota hai in the list. neway..here is my list.. 1.ardh satya 2.pather panchali 3.salaam bombay 4.mother india 5.36 chowringhee lane
Yes its truely unfair naming only Hindi films in list.I agree south Indian films should also make up the list. But what about Marathi Films??No one's talking about it.North Indian and South Indian buffs plz note that besides Hindu and South indian languages, films are also made in Marathi,Gujarati,Bangla etc.Plz dont ignore movies like Shwaas,Pinjara,Anaahat,Chandani Bar.I think those are classics. Would love to see Nayakan,i guess Nayak made in Hindi is remake of it?Remake was terrbile i must say. Raajiv21
hi Vipul, your films are very nice, t5hough i've not seen all of them.i liked sholay very much its really a wonderful film.plz, when would we be expecting your next film?

OK,Sholay was an entertaining, violent, commercial Hindi westerrn type movie;but come on Lagaan definitely desrves place in an all time Indian movie list.Within a commercial format Lagaan was a classic David vs Goliath[or Gauls vs Romans] tale told in adignified and entertaining manner.Only snobs andcynics can dismiss Lagaan.
Sreeram, you pricless...blinkered fellow. In Ghai's list Meghe Dhaaka Tara and Pather Paachaali are Bengali movies. That is a regional language, in case you didnt know. Its not Hindi.
How could you people ever forget the masterpiece of Mani Ratnam in the form of NAYAKAN..The film truly rocks. And BTW I suppose the theme is Best Indian Movies, and not Bollywood Dhamakas.. PPl llok beyond BOMBAy, creativity is going places..
Mr Ghai ! I guess you must look at other languages of indian cinema also. Hindi is not the only language in India. There are many more languages that provide better films that hindi. Its not that hindi movies are not good, but just wanted to tell you that you need to open up your mind to see other languages also which also provide great movies and not just restrict yourself within a single language.
