Also, for sheer rivetting cinema, there is Deewar with Amitabh bachchan
I would bring up the rear with Dilip Kumar's Gunga Jamuna, a very realistically made film, and Lamhe (Anil Kapoor, Sridevi) an enjoyable, but sensitive film.
It is very demoralising to see only North Indian directors and films being choosen for the Best Indian Films list.
For your info it is "Nayagan", a south indian film which made it to list and it is the only film which was declared as classic and the almost all the Crew members are still ALIVE....
There are some south indian films which are miles ahead in quality and content. The National awards is totally dominated by Malayalam and Tamil films for a very long time. These films are very much original and does not derive inspiration from Western Films.
Can a site like Rediff ignore it? Or Change the title as BEST NORTH INDIAN FILMS...
Will kindly tell ghai taht Indian cinema is not equal to the stupid bollywood masala stuff. there have been genius people like ray who made some masterpieces even 1% artisitic quality of such would not be achieved ever by ghai. by the way, has he ever heard of ray, ghatak?
Well, I am surprised as to no one speaks about the movies made by Raj kapoor. Those were the movies which showed what the future will be. eg- Awara, Shree 420, Jis Desh Me Ganga Beheti Hai, Jaagte Raho. I feel one should think over those films also.

do u mean to say,
Bengali/Marathi films are more popular than South indian films ....even u guys look up to hindi movies for entertaiment ...
by the way, What do u know about Mohanlal? ...He is easily .. one of the top 3 indian actors of this generation ....You will accept a TOP 10 list from Ghai and vipul shah ...but not a TOP 10 list from malayalam/tamil ...grt !!!!!!!!
Not only Hindi films are made in India, When you consider India's best film. You should have considered films made from all parts of India. I have seen almost all the ten films. But more better films than that. Come down little to south, you will find 100 more films better and the best than this compilation.
