When famous people like Mr. Ghai (I have great deal of respect for Mr. Ghai) prepares lists like this -- I would caution them not to loosely use "best Indian films" but use "best Hindi films". There are scores of films from Southern India that could surpass all but Gurudutt's movies in the list. Several in Telugu (which were made in Hindi some without the decency of acknowledgement -- like, Safar, Kora Kagaj, Milan, Baghban, etc), Malayalam (Sharada acted in lot of premium Malayam films) and some of the most memorable films were made in Tamil also.
Mr Ghai's list should be named the best Hindi Films. These movies are not indicative of the best that India has to offer. Stalwart directors like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Adoor Gopalkrishnan and others have made some amazing movies. Also the Tamil film industry has generated few of the Best Indian movies. The regional movies have received worldwide acclaim as opposed to a very few hindi movies.
Dear rediff, It's a great honnor that Indian films were selected to be among the best 100 movies in the last century. However some movies suggested by mr.Ghai have nothing to be qualified as the best movies (except for their usual triangal love story and dream songs). The movie Taal wasn't even commercially successful.Doesn't mr.Ghai watch movies made in other languages. If you watch Nayagan, Indian or even Hey Ram, they are far better than some movies suggested by him (KKHT or Taal).Malayalam movies are excellent and much better than Hindi movies. Most of the hindi movies are just inspired from hollywood.Apart from just few hindi movies(lagan, Soley, mother India etc), no other hindi movies are unique or original. Hence it would have been better if Mr.Ghai would have been nuetral (not selecting his own movie Taal)and select movies from other languages too.
Indian movies doesn't means Only Hindi Movies.. Ghai/rediff just talking about Bolly wood who produces the worst movies in Indian movie Industries.. there are so many good movies in other Indian Languages like Tamil, malayalam, Telugu, kannada. so called Best Hindi movies are not at all coming near to those movies
well taal is a nice movie, but definately not one of teh best and definately doesn't deserve to be showcased as a movie as one of the best...i rather feel that dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge should be mentioned as one of the best which opened doors for us at the internatinal box office and not to forget lagaan- not only did it reach the oscars, it was a story with a universal appeal and a movie that showcased indian cinema as global cinema.
With all respect to the list provided by Subhash Ghai about the best films, I would like to point out that what is listed is the Best Hindi films and not the Best Indian Films. These two definitions are by no means synonymous. There are umteen number of films made in Tamil or Telugu or Bengali or Malayalam or other indian languages which will easily qualify for the list. However in a multi lingual country like India, "The best films" selection can only happen by a group of people from multiple linguistic backgrounds. Any other attempt by an individual to produce such a list is bound to be inherently flawed as no one person is capable of producing such a list.
Juch Kuch Hota hai, Taal and Hum Aap ke hain koun ? No way! Rest of the movies deserve to be in the top 10. I wonder whiich of his films he thinks is the best he ever made. My choice would be 'Meri Jung.'.
