Why rediff gives job to such review writers like Raja Sen I wonder....What is the purpose of this review section?? To discuss and crtitique movies or to take people on ride of worlds least frequently used ??? Why the review writers like Raja Sen think that if they use some abstract words rather 'esoteric' words, they will reflect some intellect.....come on guys...your job is to write reviews...not to display that how effectively you can flipp dictionary pages to find most 'esoteric' word...I think I have to find a better alternative where I can enjoy shear reviews...not the psudo intellect's crapy words...
Disregarding the terrible reviews I had read about this film I gathered courage and went to see it at a local theatre here in Columbia, Maryland - USA. There were about 20 who showed up....not bad by my standards.
PROS:....visually stimulating cinematography. Excellent music scores. Well choreographed dance numbers...especially the 3 sisters in the village scene and the "flash dance" like sequence. for the most part the actors put on a credible performance.
CONS: Lots of loud dialogue. The editing and the splicing of the film was poor in parts.
In summation I feel Director Priyadershan lived up to his reputation as a maverick in the indian film industry.
Well... after reading so many responses to the review i think i dont need to point out the blunder that Raja Sen made, maybe he had a real bad day at work and he vent out his frustration writing his review. Our so called "critics" have such double standards when writing reviews for films that they never cease to amaze. Petty comedy is something they loath but the monotonous melodrmatic scenes (of NRIs all teary eyed, fighting about who will get which girl, or of a duo running around in a mustard field as if there was no tomorrow), is something that will praise in most flowery vocabulary (great cinematography, passionate role and other crap). As a critic you ought to have some balance and fairness about your reviews. We as common people have our own bias, but what would differentiate a critic is an unbiased unprejudiced viewpont. I hope the reviewer and the rediff team takes note.
It is showing the second week and more and more family audience are coming to see it.
Rarely you can see a second week running Hindi Film here. The last Priyadarsan Movie which saw the second show was Virasat. Even Hera Pheri doesn't got a second week here. That simply says, this film Hulchul is a hit and a good film.
Dear Rediff, it is natural to err. It is our ability to wake up each time we fell that makes a noble man.
So, rediff, I hope you will pledge one apology for the selection of Raja Sen for the review of this movie and you may post another critic review, either another of your critic (who is not like Raja Sen) or invite one from the audience. Readers only will appreciate it.
Had you not removed the letter to editor box I would have only posted this one to that box.
Any way, I am happy that Hulchul is running well. From net, I can see that it is performing well at USA & UK alongwith Indian cities.
Dear reader, if you didn't see the film, go and watch it.
Hulchul,made out to be a all-out comedy film has very few(if at all)genuine laughs.The so-called comedy situations do not seem natural at all.Anyone who's seen the original (Godfather in Malayalam) will have a tough time watching the movie.As far as the director alleging that the story has a few similiarities with the original is really funny as the story and even dialogues are plain translation. I would suggest to the director that he does not remake a film if he can't do the job properly especially if the original is a movie nicely done.Priyadarshan has been remaking movies from Malayalam for quite some time now as if they are his own but this one is one movie badly done.
Both hera pheri and hulchul are remakes of popular south indian blockbusters.the former one is a malayalam remake and the latter one is a telugu remake.people should be ashamed to call it their story.Indeed hulchul is a movie that old.it was released in telugu by the name "peddarikam" in 1992.yeah 12 years is a long time.people might have already fogotten that such a story was already made and was a hit a decade ago.so u wanna make a remake of a popular flick just wait for a decade,people's butts cool off by then.

actually the telugu film 'peddarikam' was a remake of the malayalam film Godfather... I am a malayali..but I can understand telugu. The telugu film starred Jagpati Babu, sukanya,chandramohan etc.I know that the character of the father of mr.babu was played by the legendary malayalam theatre personality N.N.Pillai..who did the same role in the original.

Dear ram, please dont say Hungama and Hulchal are remakes of telugu movies. they are (the telugu ones) remakes of Malayalam originals Hungama - Poochakku oru moookuthi - Directed by Priyadarshan (His first film) Hulchal - God Father - Directed by Siddique-Lal infact in Telugu remake of "GodFather", the father was played by N.N.Pillai (one of the greatest theatre artists in Malayalam) and he is in Malayalam original too. like any other telugu movie, these ones too remakes from Malyalam hits. Infact Malayalam Cinema is benifitted with these remakes and it is an old process tooo. the last one in this genre is Yuvasena remake of malayalam movie 4 the People. So dont Blame priyadarshan, he rightly creditted God father and Poochakkoru mookkuthi"
I have read Raja Sen review before also. It appears that this guy is a Art Film Reviewer. He went to watch Hulchul with a mindset as if he will be presented an art movie. Many a times it happens to good reviewer that they expect something extra-ordinary and get caught into the dilemma. Raja Sen's dillemma has something to do wiht his own and not with Hulchul. A comedy needs to be viewed in its own way. I think rediff has to be blamed here more than Raja Sen because you have to choose right man for a right task. More than the movie this reviw would irritate people who go to theatres to have fun.
