What were you expecting???

This is a commercial Bollywood film. It has been made with the audience of India and the audience living abroad in mind. Do you think the more-than- 50% of the population in India living below the poverty line have any idea of the world outside India? I think not. Their impressions of the world abroad are, indeed, that of women clad in skimpy outfits, colourful ambience and as weird as it may sound, folks dancing and singing on the streets. Although that is more likely to happen on the streets of India than that of the US.
Having said this, where do you think Bollywood films make most of their money? You got it, in India. So who do you think the film-makers will try to please more, the NRIs or the Indian in India? You wanted logic, well, here it is.

If an American came up to me and asked about Indian Weddings, would I ask him/her to watch DDLJ, KKHH or K3G? No. I would ask him/her to watch Monsoon Wedding, which is a more realistic depiction of the Indian Wedding.

So, I am sorry to say that you have picked the wrong movie to get a sense of the 'real' New York. You want a sense of the real New York? Why don't you delve into your own memories, after all you are a New Yorker

Just another aspect

Whoa Whoa .... People are getting worked up for their depiction in movies????

Bollywood movies (and Hollywood movies too) have glorified, magnified, blown up... If everybody started taking objections, think what would happen.
1. Heroes would die with the first bullet that hit him
2. Rajnikant would never be able to achieve superhuman abilities
3. Police would ban movies for their "Stupid" depictions (which I wouldn't debate too much)
4. Mithunda would not evade bullets
so on and so forth.....

So, watch movies to escape reality not to analyze them..........

Good critic work Anita

Hi all I am an undergraduate from Chennai, aspiring to go to Us for my masters.Very pleasing to see the comments of Anita and her love for our culture.I haven't seen KHNH yet.So i can't comment much about it.I totally agree with ur view of Indians in US being more conscious about our culture than Indians in India.I say this coz I have got both Desi friends in US as well as the ones gone from here for studies.I am sorry to say this but the truth is that the Indian youth in India is a bunch of totally confused lot, highly influenced by the grandure created by the outer world in the name of westernisation.

Indians

I could never imagine that, from the movies like "Mujhse Dosti Karoge" and "Kal Ho na Ho" all one would get is, lifestyle of Indians in America. Heros in those two movies were living abroad, that was purely situational. It had nothing to do with the story of the movie. If you change the story so that, Hritik/Shahrukh were living in Greece/Australia/even in Mumbai that will not affect the storyline of the movie, not even a bit. Kal Ho Na Ho, is a movie about love, sacrifice and values. It is NOT about New York and how to live there, neither was Mujhse Dosti Karoge. It is not supposed to show, how much time it takes, to walk from Queens to Brooklyn. You better see a map for that reason.

Title of your article is "Who is better, Indians or NRI?". You know what NRI stands for? NRI means Non-resident Indians, INDIANS not living abroad. The moment you compare yourself with Indians, you lost it, as you are a part of them. I am an Indian living in America, actually a full-fledged New Yorker (Unlike You. People, who dont appreciate their heritage, cannot belong to any group or community). I consider myself as an Indian first. I am an Indian, living in America. I didn't know, Indian

About NRI but For Indians
by Vishal on Dec 02, 2003 09:45 PM

The article is very reflective, contempltaive and direct. Such movies only creats prejudices among people residing back home. Actually the very purpose of cinema making in Bollywood has always remained to making profit. I think these movies are not all meant for NRIS .No doubt plost is set around NRI but essentialy they have made to fulfil the subconscious desires of indians back home. Perhaps they get kind of unusual pleasure when they see amoral, mechanised NRIS and hows we only preserving our great culture. NRI simply dont have to worry about it. But will we ever see any movie protraying the reality about NRIs?

NRIs as shown in Bollywood movies
by sonia gupta on Dec 02, 2003 09:09 PM

I agree with Anitha Venkathramani. I think its high time these Hindi movies director use some logic and thought process before making a movie. Also the NRI picture that they give to majority of Indians in India is totally wrong. I think this misrepresentation of NRIs should be brought out in front of the many Indians here, who believe what they see in the movies.
